SkegShield?

I lost my skeg a couple weeks ago and I was told I could weld a new one on. I also heard that I could get a skegshield.

Anyone have any luck with these or try them before? It looks like it might work if I happen to have enough left of my original skeg. They are made of Staineless Steel, I hear when it comes to props it is better to have a broken prop then a broken lower unit, I don't know if it is the same with the skeg.

Thanks,

Re: SkegShield?

you can weld them on....

however....if done incorrectly.....it will melt the seals an you will need a re seal.

the skeg gaurd is an exellent option, and iboats is an exellent store.

I have used one in the past and it just bolted on..... after you drill a few holes.

I have also made my own from Stainless Steel in the past.

They work fine and fast to install w/o any welding needs.

Re: SkegShield?

Already bought a Bimini from them, I guess information from this site is worth my blind loyalty. I know they have saved me a lot of money already.

I will have to see if I have enough skeg left to use a replacement like this. In any case what is the going rate to have one re-welded on? If I have to take the lower unit off, I might as well do it when I replace the bellows and impeller this year.

Re: SkegShield?

If you purchase the skeguard...... you can install it..... if you need a replacement skeg welded then the going rate is probably $75-$100 (on average).

PLEASE find a real good welder with aluminum experience or it could cook your seals and do more harm.
