Any kind of anti corrosive grease will do.

ok i used some lubriplate. put some electrical rubber sealant tape over the rubbed wire. cleaned everything up well and put it all back together....

now...... no one in this county has a flywheel turner. short of ordering one, any other tricks for holding the flywheel up your sleeve?

you can try a piece of 5/16 round bar or larger long screw driver, there should be several holes around the outer rim area of flywheel, look for a solid place around the block for the bar to wedge up agaist just use caution as to not rest it on a moving part or linkage!!!!!!

jig.jpg these!!! using 1/4" not 5/16" I was wrong!!!! I made a jig instead of using the block as a stop, so not to damage anything!!!!

i have heard of it but never tried it. seems a bit like it could mess up something. i go to church with a guy that runs a ob shop. i'll see if he has one i can borrow. i just hate to borrow stuff from folks like that.

i could prob fashion up something like shown in the pic too. i don't have a welder but i think i could prob use a couple of short bolts in some angle iron with a nut on them to hold them.

140-150 lbs is a lot of torque too.

I used to use the rope trick when I was on a service call, and left my flywheel turner in the shop because the cust gave me the wrong info. But it does work. Your idea about the bolts and nuts sounds good.

If you try the jig thing it does work well, will sustain the 150lbs re-torque, mine bent a bit using it with the puller and a breaker bar to get the damn flywheel off, but should not need the same kinda torque to retighten the flywheel nut, you most likely will have to use carriage bolts they will have the threads all the way up, to allow the nuts, I used #8 harden bolts but #5's should be ok! the rope in the Cyl trick......never would have thought of that.....LOL...I'll keep that in mind

Re: sluggish on accell 200hp johnson

ok guys i made a flywheel holder that worked pretty well. enough to get the 140 lb torque. now tell me what i screwed up in process of doing all of this. upon trying to start i get one poof like its trying to start then that's it. done it multiple times and most it has run has been maybe 2 seconds. i went back over and looked at all my connections and everything seems to be where it is supposed to be, as it pretty much fell right back to the right place. stumped for sure now......and in worse shape than before.

Back to basics. Check the spark on all 6 cyls and see if it jumps a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester.

was going to do that this evening but it got dark on me. got the battery on a slow charge overnight and i'll give it a whirl tomorrow.

is it possible it sheared the flywheel key that quick? what are the symptoms for that?

Just what you have but check the spark first. If you torqued it correcty it shouldn't have sheared. Put a screw driver in # 1 cyl and bring it to tdc. At that time check the timing marks on the flywheel with the timing pointer on the block. If they're off, the flywheel key is sheared.

There's no NAPA, Matco Tools, or Snap On dealers in your county?

The flywheel nut torque is 145 foot pounds, not 140.

ha...Joe there is a NAPA but they didn't have one. Snap On and Matco.... there prob is one somewhere around, but didn't even occur to me. guess i need to look and see.

i'll check the tdc and see what the deal is. is that key something standard or a dealer item?

i appreciate ya'lls help and patience.

happy new year.

Re: sluggish on accell 200hp johnson

The flywheel key is a special key, part number 307480, a dealer item. Nothing else will do.... you absolutely must use this key, and the torque must be 145 foot pounds.

Strange about NAPA.... normally they can get one in the same day. Matco would be much more reasonable than Snap On.
