Have been taking care of a bunch of kids at Camp this week ... I am exhausted, but it has been a lot of fun.

However, ladies walked into the Pavilion kitchen this afternoon to get supper ready and came back out a little worked up. Then one of the guys went in with a hoe and started beating a black snake. I stopped him and proceeded to attempt to catch him to take him away from the pavilion and release him to eat more rodents. Guess I need some more lessons, cause he was REALLY mad from being beat with a hoe and he "caught" me.

Ended up having to kill him to get him to release my thumb! OUCH!!!! And yes, I know without pictures it did not happen ... so I sent someone for a camera while I waited with the snake hanging on my thumb ... just for you guys!!!!!!

Re: Snake Bite!!!!

Which hand would you use to pick up a dangerous snake ?
Someone else's !

Since it was in the kitchen area ..............
What do you get when you cross a snake and a pie?
A pie-thon!

What do you get if you cross a snake and a hotdog ?
A fangfurter !

Why did some snakes disobey Noah when he said "Go forth and multiply" ?
They couldn't, they were adders !

So, the serpent bit aspeck and they had to put the serpent down so it would not suffer???? Isn't that like forcing religion on a snake!

Great pictures!!!

Re: Snake Bite!!!!

They keep asking me if I am okay and I start shaking my hand and then tell them if my hand starts to shake they will know I am in trouble! Non-poisonous variety, no biggy, other than it hurt and their teeth are angled back so the rodents can't escape, and neither can the thumb! Just couldn't rip it out without a lot of pain and blood. Only a little blood as it was, and most of that was the black snakes! LOL! Was kind of fun torturing the ladies that were watching ... but my wife kept laughing and saying, "I told you to catch it my way..." Yes Dear! :D

Re: Snake Bite!!!!

Aspeck I love your shirt or whatever it's called. If you find yourself in that pickle again (non-deadly snake) you can get the snakes mouth to open and usually most of the teeth out by pushing it's mouth towards yourself and gently prying it's mouth open if it doesn't release by itself from the pushing . Their curved ( almost like a fishhook ) teeth point backwards towards their gullet to help their smaller prey to not escape an almost missed bite. On something as large as your thumb it may have trouble unhooking its tiny teeth or releasing its bite esp. if it hit hard and drove your thumb deep into it's mouth as it appears in the pic. trying to pull it backwards and off (Instinct) only drives the teeth in deeper esp. if it's still clamping down hard and it may not be able to open it's mouth to let go. If you pull it away too hard or just yank it off it will really tear up your skin and lots of the tiny teeth will break off and need to be removed like so many splinters. You probably know to wash and disinfect very well afterward because ALL reptiles have some nasty bacterias in their mouths. I admire you for you for trying to re-locate the snake and I guess you inadvertantly showed the kids why it's better to leave some snakes alone. BRAVO SIR.....................PS don't ask how I know this important info

Some people will do anything to get their picture on the net. Letting a snake bite them for a pic...that takes the cake :)

Poor snake had to be put down after the pic :D

Re: Snake Bite!!!!

mommicked, I was trying to push against it. Have handled a lot of snakes over the years and this is only the second black snake that has gotten me in the past 40 years, so pretty good odds. Another guy was holding the head down and he was squeezing a little too hard, making the head turn slightly sideways. That meant I didn't have a good enough hold and the snake was able to twist around and attack. I remained calm, actually laughing most of the time. I was enjoying everyone else panicking, and the kids were not around, so that was good.

He latched on hard and I was trying the pushing toward the back of the mouth to open him up, but that didn't work. I tried poking him in the eyes, but that didn't work, I tried prying, but I was a little cautious there because I didn't want him latching on the the other hand. I didn't want to use my knife to pry him for fear of cutting myself and making it worse., so I thought about Bob's idea of cutting off my thumb, but thought I would sacrifice the snake instead. Even then I had to push and pry to get the thumb out because of the curved teeth, which I was familiar with. I was NOT ABOUT TO YANK my thumb out! DOUBLE OUCH if I had!

I then washed it a number of times with peroxide and then administered an antibacterial. Puncture wounds always scare me. I am watching for red streaks up the arm also. I am not expecting them, but am going to be cautious.

We have laughed alot about it, but I also know snakes are not to be messed with and they need to be respected, as are any bites from any animals (or any puncture wounds for that matter). I would do it again in the same situation, but I would try to get people to remain calmer before I went in ... the several whacks with the garden hoe had the snake all angry and agressive before I got to pick him up.

Aspeck, sorry I underestimated your snake handlin knowledge but maybe we informed some future snakebite victims how to try to remove stubborn ones in the process . I remember a snake that would'nt budge so I relaxed and waited a few mins. while gently supporting it's body and it finally loosened enough to get free. I wonder if holding your hand (and the snakes head) in a bucket of water would have helped ? I haven't tried it but it seems like it might work . Maybe laying it and the hand, leg etc on the ground and not holding the snake at all might help too.

I never took your church as the "snake handlin'" sort. Hmmmmm ...

Technically I think he was supposed to bite you in the heel ;).

Math failure!!!!! You are over 40 years old!!! What you are trying to say is this is the second time you have been bitten and you are how old? :D Take the snake bites and divide them into your age and that equals ans average of ______ (fill in the blank) :D  Mathematically we can predict the next incident! ;)

That's my older brother and I ... not a lot of pride in the family! HA!

So, you older brother who is holding the safe end of the snake (okay, this is a prime example of who paid attention in school) Was he in charge of this "hazing" ritual? Hazing is considered illegal!!! :p

I am so happy you were not bitten by anything poisonous and we can all laugh about it.

No prob, and the water might have worked ... Didn't think of that at the time. It is all good.

Gotta get back to the little darlin's ... Last day, then clean-up, then crash!

If it weren't for snakes, rats and mice would rule the world... I Hate rats and mice!

You did good trying to rescue the snake, you'd have done better to take the snake outside to a quiet area and sit down on the ground and lay the snake on the ground and relax.

Snakes are one of mans best friends.
