Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

i have never understood how "they" can get bye with these gas prices, it should be illegal. you see different states with different price increases and the fluctuation of prices within each area of the states is ridiculous, here in this area of wv the gas prices have not jumped even close to what you all are reporting. two weeks ago it was $1.43gal now it is $1.55gal, "i'm not complaining" its alot less than you all are paying, i just dont understand it. who in the world can afford $2.15 a gal? not me! especially in my gas guzzling chevy silverado 4X4. someone needs to come out with a good solar electric car, but then i guess they'd find a way to charge you for the sun!

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

You guys truly crack me up.

You sound just like California did when they were complaining about being gouged by the electric companies. "We need price controls and regulation!!!"

Not likely to happen, I am afraid.

The answer is to hedge the cost of your gas by buying oil company stock. The oil companies did not give those big campaign contributions to Bush without a plan to reap some benefits from it, of course, and here some of them are.

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

PW, check your facts. Oil company stocks are flat to down. Take that Bush admin kickback crap and apply it your boy Clinton. A night in the Lincoln bedroom anyone? Can you say CHINA? Give me a break with that liberal conspiracry theory garbage.

Sorry guys, this is how a free market economy works. Unless you can prove there is price collusion this is normal supply and demand at work. The fact that prices move quickly demonstrated the efficiency of the commodoties markets.

The market thinks the long term trend of gas prices is down, down, down. Hence stock prices are flat, flat, flat... dogs as they are called.

If there was such profits to be made in that busness you would see new entrants flood in. It's the way the game works.

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

While I agree that it is a normal price fluctuation, and you will note I did not suggest price controls be implemented, I think you need to check your data re oil company stocks. Exxon has raised 20% since January, for example. And profit levels have been at all time records.

Do you really think that all of those campaign contributions were given out of the goodness of their hearts, and a sincere hope for the betterment of mankind? Give me a call, I've got a bridge for sale!

And why is the counter to this argument: "Well, Clinton did something worse" You sound like my kids back when they were preschoolers. "She did it first!!!"

You shouldn't quit your day job to become and investment advisor. It hasn't even kept pace with the S&P and is trading where it did a year ago:

Nothing like nailing 'em to the wall, huh Ralph.

It's about time someone did!

Some people get so wrapped-up in their ideology, that they don't know, or want to know the truth.

Thank you!

Kenny

I would really love to tag along with him for 3 - 6 months. I could learn a lot from him.

I sent him a letter a few months ago and he was kind enough to send me a signed photo. :D

Supply and demand. It really is just the free market system working as it should. Gas demand is heavy during summer holidays due to increased auto travel.

If there was collusion, prices would go up and never come down.

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

Gasoline retailers here on Long Island are predicting that gasoline prices will remain high indefinitly, and should top out between $2.25/gal. - $2.60/gal., and stay there!

We shall see.

Kenny

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

I have an idea that would get a handle on gas
prices. Take out an add in your local paper
urging consumers to only purchase fuel from a
specified supplier like " shell" for example.
It would only take a few hours or perhaps days
before the other suppliers dropped there prices.
Take out another add urging consumers to do the
same the following week just change the supplier.
Of cource the general public would have to go
along with the adds to make it work, but it would
work! I think.

Kenny, with all due respect, you're better of reading through the market data and reports on any of the 5M financial web sites. Retailers have no special insight into the macro forces at play.

NOSLEEP it is very difficult to manipulate commodity prices. Many have tried, including nations. Just ask France what happened to them when they tried to manipulate the value of the Franc. Soros almost bankrupted the whole nation.

It is pure supply and demand - how many people are out trying to buy gas? How much supply is there? The markups are virtually fixed. The only time they get a winfall is when prices change quickly and inventory on hand becomes more valuable than what they paid for it. Inventories are pretty low though becuase the flip side is also true, when prices drop you lose money on it.

Supplies are tight right now for a few reasons: Blackout knocked out a lot of refinaries. Refinary capacity is low in general (not many new plants). Demand is high due to the summer driving season

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

Collectively, people have the power to manipulate
the market. The question remains do they have the
will.
The oil company's manipulate the market, just like
the energy company's do. You only have to look
back at Enron for confirmation.

I think it would work too Kenny

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

Problem is that nobody will sell fuel at a loss - prices are set each evening based on spot market prices. That is one of the reasons all those chain gas stations invested so heavilily in VSAT satelite technology.

Go hang out where there are gas stations on 4 corners and watch what happenes. The guy with the lower price, even if just a few cents cheaper, get nearly all the business. Fuel is a commodity and buyer are highly price sensitive.

Re: SOARING GAS PRICES

At the price of fuel these days, no one is selling
fuel at a loss! The oil companies are growing fat
on profits as we speak. The consumer is the one
that is out of pocket. We are told prices are up because of demand. The business of refining oil
has never been more profitable. The sky is not
falling, and we are not low on supply. But we
definitely are sheep.
