While doing some visual inspections on the exterior of the boat I notice the oh so obvious rub marks from beaching it over the years. Mostly up towards the front down the keel. But this one on the stern right under where the hull meets the transom is a good one! I didn't even think it was all that bad when I noticed it (which was in the middle of the afternoon), but that evening I had my trouble light laying in the boat and came out of the garage to see a glow coming from the back of the boat. Not sure what I am supposed to do to repair this problem yet, so I thought I would throw it out to some of you experts and get some ideas. Hope you all can help, this is my first boat resto. Thanks for your time. enjoy the pics! The last three pics in my shareaproject are in reference to this post. 1974 Southwind Resto

Fiberglass without gel coat is translucent, so seeing light through it is normal. From the pic I can't tell if more than just the gel coat has been chipped, but the exterior hull repairs will be easier than what you will be doing on the inside.

Thanks Baja,

I am a total newbie to all of this boat restoration stuff. But I am looking forward to learning something new and at the same time bringing my boat back to life. Will let you know how it goes as I stumble through the process. :)

My advise would to you would be: stay active on this forum during your restoration and read as much as you can of other peoples restos.

I agree, it looks like just the gel coat is chipped away letting light shine through the fiberglass beneath. You'll be able to repair that after you get the big job inside the hull done.

For what it's worth that is an awesome looking boat and motor! How's the motor looking these days?

Thanks Kid, I appreciate the compliment on my boat! She was a looker back in the day! And as far as the motor goes, it runs really good still, never really had any problems with it. And after last night, The right side of the motor looks great!...........I applied some of my top secret polish to it and it made the motor look like it was freshly painted. Of course I wish it was a 150hp insted of a 115hp just for the thrill factor. But it will pull a 250lb+ skier out of the hole and run you over the water all day long for a great day of boating. Check out the pics of the before and after polishing session which only took about 20 minutes.
As far as being an active member here in the forums, I have been reading the posts in here for about two weeks straight trying to learn all I can before I get into this project with both feet. I think I have read every post for the last 100 days on the subjects of restoration and the like. Also the posts on Merc outboard problems etc. I will keep you posted on my progress as it goes along.

Okay I've gotten the "how-to" on one of the other forums in here. So here is a couple of pics of my motor: Left side, Right side, Before and after the polish. Respectively.
