I want to have a go at some of you blokes.
It has to do with what has happened in Spain a couple of days ago.
I am assuming that you got good coverage on the Bombings.
My point is;
we hear a lot of very strong opinions and views about terrorists/politics (in relation too)in certain threads, and that is fine, I don't have a problem with it.
BUT, one of your closest Allies in the Iraq war sufferes a shocking act or terrorism, and unless I have missed something here, not one of you have the nuts to raise the topic.
It dosn't matter who did the bombing, it is an outrage against the Spanish people.
Unless the topic has been discussed in the last few days and I can't find the thread, (in which case I sincerely apologise), then some of you could be just a little perochial.

Cheers
Phillip

Re: Spain

Phil maybe it is so commonplace to have some type of bombings everday somewhere, we just forget.
Your right, I don't think it has been brought up either.
I for one feel for them cause I can relate to such an act(9-11).

Just like all our men and women that are getting killed in Iraq, that has kinda took a back burner, for whatever reason, but it don't mean we don't think about them.

Re: Spain

good point phil,
perhaps we have tunnel vision sometimes and it's
hard to see the big picture. it is a terrible
tradgedy and just shows that terrorism is a world
problem, not a US problem. apparently Al Quaida
has taken responsibility for the attack? I only
pray that it doesn't influence the current elections
there because then the terrorists have won.

Re: Spain

The terrorists totally turned the tide of the spanish elections. A bombing a couple days before the elections, everyone in an uproar because they percieve the reason it happened was because they helped the US with Iraq. Now there is an anti-US government elected...all within a week. Look for the same thing to happen in other free countries around election time.

Not really the kind of message you want to send to terrorists, IMO

Re: Spain

guageguy is 100% correct. You can look for it to happen here before the US 2004 election as well. One of the Al Quaida terroists responsible for the bombing has already been linked to the 911 attack. This tragedy is a direct result of Spain aiding the U.S. I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see them pull their troops out of Iraq. Others will follow.

Re: Spain

Spanish voters have not only done themselves a disservice, but they have done the free world a disservice. They have told the forces of evil that they can be cowed by murder and mayhem, only encouraging the evildoers to kill and maim some more. Worse, they have not only encouraged terrorist attacks on themselves, but on their "allies" in the United States and the rest of Europe.

The United States and the rest of the free world must stand strong in the wake of Spain's surrender to thugs and murderers. On September 11th, Americans stood shoulder to shoulder and vowed to win a war in which the terrorists had just raised the stakes to an unimaginable level. We provided an example for the rest of the world to follow. We knew that we had no choice but to fight back and annihilate the enemy, because they, like Nazi Germany, are monsters with no respect for human life and who will stop at nothing to achieve their goal.

The people of the free world cannot afford to follow the Spanish path. We cannot afford to tell the terrorists that we can be bombed into submission. Spain has ensured that more terrorism will follow across the globe. People who love freedom must let the terrorists know that we will never give in to thugs and cowards. We cannot afford to surrender in this war.

Its strange yet sad, here America looses 3,000 in one day and fights back and has continuted to fight relentlessly against terrorism.

And here you have Spain who lost an approx 200 people in one day and they capitulate and suck-up to and appease terrorists by giving up before even trying to fight.

How sad, and what a difference between the two.

Re: Spain

Great post Ladyfish.....yer right on. I for one believe we need to step up the war on terror, even if we have to do it for the spanish cuz they dont have the stomach for it. When we find out who is responsable we need to take care of business once again since very few other countries can seem to do whats right   by the way Kiwi Phil you and our Brit freinds are in the group that seems to help take care of business :)

Re: Spain

Keep a close eye on Spain. I was sickened by the criminal murderous acts as much as any human should be. However, not only did Al Qaeda just defeat the Spanish people wholesale, the new leader has vowed to push towards a pure socialist state and not work with the opposition party at all.
Take a short look at the recent history of Spain, just prior to the full outbreak of WW2, when the Nazis were involved in the civil war there, what the politics were, and where they are heading now. The leaders of the EU, while they tend to "lean" somewhat socialist, have quite a reason to be very, very concerned.

Re: Spain

Although it may not have been discussed here on iBoats, where the world's problems are debated and solved, the bombings have been dominating our news media since they happened. We understand what they are gong through from first hand experience.

I will say, the fact that may have turned the tide of the elections is a defeat for all of us. This is a big victory for the terrorists and will certainly encourage more of it.

To think that helping the US brought this on reminds me of all the attempts to appease the Nazis before the World realized their true aims. They are out to impose their view and religion on the world and sooner or later, they will get around to everyone.

Re: Spain

The leaders of Spain took a very strong and courageous stand with the coalition in Irag. They did not ever have the backing of the Spanish people. Unfortunately, this is a big win for terrorism.

Because this thread was started by one of our Australian brothers, it might be worth stressing that Australia has been with us since 9/11--on the ground, in special ops, both in Afghanistan and Irag.

PM John Howard has done this rather courageously, in my view, because his support has not been wholehearted among Australians. And, they have paid a price too with the Bali bombing that killed so many of their countrymen. The Bali bombings also made a casualty of the Australian belief that "Everybody likes us, we're Australian."

Another coalition partner, Italy, has a majority of their citizens in opposition to involvment in Iraq.

I hope that no more of the coalition members back away from their responsibilities. I have been glad they are with us.

Free countries that have backed away from the fight against despotism, terror and evil will not save themselves. Only recently bombing attempts were broken up in France.

Someday we will win this fight, but only if we as a nation ourselves keep on track and not back away from our own responsibilies. The enemies who would do us harm will exploit any weakness we show in our resolve, and quite frankly, don't give a darn whether Bush or Kerry wins the election. They will hate us all the same.

Having travelled fairly extensively in the Islamic world, I can only say that freedoms great hope lies within those countries and peoples themselves. The desire of the majority to raise their children to a better life and to shake loose the sub-culture of destruction that has taken root.

Re: Spain

Well, all we can do is keep fighting, alone if necessary and wait for the rest of the world to wake up. I hope it doesn't take a mushroom cloud.

Re: Spain

What if that were to happen here before the election. Do you think that would sway the vote?? I for one would feel more resolved than I was before..

I would hope we would be smart enough to see that the attack would be seen as a desire for administration change, which means we are getting at them.

What do you think??

Re: Spain

I think you are right Roger - we are the main target so we would be more inclined to stay the coarse. We backed away a lot at first - WTC 1, Kobar, Embassies, Cole and finally 911 - so it took us a while to wake up too. Now we are in the fight and any additional attacks will stiffen our resolve.

Re: Spain

Other countries will be bombed into submission. Spain has ensured that more terrorism will follow across the globe, Spain's reaction has sent Al Qaeda and the like a message. We cannot operate on fear which is what Spain has done, we must stand strong in the face of evil.

We cannot afford to surrender in this war on terrorism. This is when the US has to be the strongest. I am scared to death that if Kerry gets elected, he will pull out of Iraq, and anywhere else we are fighting the war on terrorism.

We'd better hope Homeland Security is doing its job. Unfortunately, we are extremely weak in this area and terrorists know it.

The radical Islamic web sites are already bragging that they overthrew the Spanish government.

Re: Spain

That's true for us, but most of our allies that stood beside us had a majority of their people against helping us. Anyone who has an anti-American stance in those countries will do well in an election, especially after a tragedy where helping the US is being used as an excuse for the tragedy.

Re: Spain

disagree... we are not the main target. they are
chipping away at the foundation in spain...

we have learned the price of freedom 100 fold
and we didn't puss-out! we were too content, they
got lucky with a sucker punch. won't happen again!
goal is not to take us head on (scared), but to
try to isolate us in the world by using fear of
reprisal.
fear is the strongest motivation in life IMO...
if u let it be.
