Gang,

Just an update,

Finally got to test out the new Solas.

Nice prop!

With Smart tabs the boat jumps on plane almost instantly! I can stay on plane even at 10-15 mph. My RPM's dropped ~ 400, so instead of 4800 I'm WOT @ 4400. Top speed GPS 41.5 MPH. Not bad for a 3.0!

That's why I mentioned the 19" Stiletto, you have a fairly light 4cyl. boat that doesn't need a big bladed large diameter prop, but nobody listens to me, not even my wife

Hi MikDee

I guess I was expecting a bit more speed outta the Solas, but if my boat is loaded down with 4 adults, do you think it would have better holeshot than the 19" Stiletto? I may just order one and test it out... iboats is out of stock! I did find one for $259... I'm also curious what rpm's the 19" Stiletto would generate?

I just ordered a 19" Stiletto to test...

Dude said if it wasn't better than the Solas, send it back...

I may just keep both..... Solas for low end grunt, and Stiletto for more rpms and top end... We'll see how they compare...

I'll post findings ASAP...

I think you'll find the Stiletto to be faster, & better all around for the reasons I mentioned, it will spin up faster, even with a load in your boat (it is vented). I think you'll find the Stiletto like "the little engine that could!" I just hope it doesn't over rev your motor, maybe you could plug up the vents to help with that.

Less pitch = better hole shot. Vents = better hole shot, Higher RPM usually = lower top speed, not always, and you are eventually going to be comparing different props so the results could be all over the place. My guess is you have the expected results backwards . . . ;)

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

How much has been spent on props for a 40mph 4cyl?

I think a better choice would have been a Hustler, sorry I didn't get that thrown out there sooner.

Are you bashin my little 40mph 4 bangor! :D

yes, if I keep both props then $540 has been spent on props for a 4 cylinder.

Actually you suggested the Hustler way back when, I wish I could test that as well...

I still would like to spend the afternoon testing a bunch of props.

Hopefully my data will help someone in the future.

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Cuda you should be able to exchange that 20p Solas for a 18 or 19p...Be prepared for the Stilletto to give you more overall lift...maybe 1 mph faster but the same rpm range. Stilletto puts generous amounts of cupping on there props it will probably act the same as the 20 Solas..

;) Have fun but watch the dough..Trust me here there will a endless toy wish list..:D

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

I seem to be going through the same headache! 18.5' Reinell w/ 4.3L. Have a Michigan wheel aluminum 21"p 3 blade and just baught a Solas 4 blade 19"p SS. Campared them both this weekend. I wanted more hole shot and slower plaining speed which I did get w/ the 4 blade.

I also didn't gain/loose any speed or RPM at WOT. I have ~200-300RPM to spare, (get 4800-4900 and my spec is 4600). I noticed at lower throttle that my speed was down at the same RPM's but when I pushed it to the top, the speed came right up to where the aluminum prop was. The WOT was a shock as I have read the same threads you have and figured I would come down a little but I guess going down to a 19", it sayed the same so I just ordered a 4 blade 21"p so get the RPM down a little. I may loose a little hole shot but I expect my top speed to go up and my RMP to go down at WOT. For that reason, I also ordered smart tabs. I plan to return the 19" but we'll see.

I am sure you will let us know how it turns out.

Just about anything beats an aluminum Michigan wheel, just an example, I had the same pitch Merc. Black Max aluminum props that performed better.

Re: Stainless vs. Aluminum

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I though Michigan wheel was the manufacturer for the Quicksilver black max.

Wired what you have said makes perfect sense. But threads can get pretty messy with all the numbers being thrown around..You should start an new thread..;)

I don't think so, at least not 14yrs ago when I was using them.
