I have been offered 2004 6hp mercury long shaft to use as a kicker/backup on my superfisherman for a real good price. Friend has been using it on a 18' mako for a kicker, and wants a little more power. Dealer offered him $450 on trade for a 9.9. He offered it to me at that price. Said he would rather it go to a friend that a "thief dealer" as he put it.

I am not shure if this will be a decent motor for my uses, or if its to small. I know a 2 cyl 8 or 9.9 will be ideal, but I don't have the money for it right now. Will the 6 work for the time being, or am I asking to much?

Btw, I will be using the boat on inland waters with not alot of current most of the time, with a little tidal bay use.

thanks

I think it will work just fine for you, especially if your Starcraft is of the aluminum persuasion (like your name suggests).

yea, she is tin. 92" beam. From what I can tell, around 1200 lbs dry weight hull, about 380lbs motors(140hp v4 and the 6hp), 200 lbs fuel max, and asorted gear and big dumb fishing buddies. Oh, and I don't wan't to forget the extra 100lbs of wet foam that I will find when I tear out the deck this winter. lol

Have a 7.5 Johnson on the 21' Mariner, low idle just under 1mph, up to about 7mph.

Your boat seems to weigh a lot more than mine and has about 180 more gallons of fuel.

Buy it use it, it you like it keep it. If it doesn't work out, look for something bigger and then sell it for more than you paid.

Tincan,
Osby has it just right... so i agree X2, buy it, use it should be fine, if for some reason you dont like it down the road, you could easily sell it for $600 fast and upgrade. I am putting a 8hp Rude on the back of the 22' Holiday and it will be plenty... and we fish a lot of river jaws that enter the ocean for salmon with current. You should be just fine...

Grab, Run it... You'll be glad you did...

The HP would be marginal if it were a short shaft. Unless you can mount it real high, I think it will be too far in the water, causing too much drag, and you won't be happy with it.

I ran a short shaft 6 on my 16 footer and it waorked perfect. My 19 footer runs a 9.9 short shaft and it is optimum.

Being mission impossible to plane that boat with a 6 HP, tail drag will be minimum with a long shaft. Probably will have pushing issues with strong currents and fast winds.

The drag of a long shaft will have no affect, and it being a long shaft is a plus. The down side is that its a single cylinder model, they tend to vibrate and be a little louder, this may or may not bother you depending on how you use it. It will push the the boat well enough.
