Starter Help!!!!

Put a new perm magnet starter in my 2.5L 120hp last fall and only used it 3 times since. The stater seems to start out ok and then it will grind, like it is not engaging fully onto the flywheel. It also sometimes runs on with the key off for a couple of moments, usually only after it starts to make grinding noises. I pulled the starter and the starter teeth look good and the flywheel looked ok also. I did notice the flywheel was shinny on the first 1/4 of the teeth leading my to believe the starter is not engaging all the way. I never had any starting problems with my old oem brick starter. Any suggestions??

Re: Starter Help!!!!

I think there were 2 different tooth pitches used on the 3.0. best I remember one had 11 teeth on the drive and the other 9 teeth.
it may also need to be shimmed.

Re: Starter Help!!!!

Does shimming actually move the starter teeth away from the flywheel?

Re: Starter Help!!!!

Do I shim the starter bolt towards the flywheel or away from the flywheel to move the starter closer to the flywheel?

Re: Starter Help!!!!

Starter running on without the key? Hmmmm. Never heard this one. First thought is sticking ignition switch. Did you use the new bolts that came with the starter? Very important to do so. Follow Rodbolt suggestion and check the new starter against the old one and check the # of teeth on the starter drive.

Re: Starter Help!!!!

I counted 11 teeth on my starter, I believe this is because of the gear reduction starter(perm. mag), the newer style.

Which teeth are softer, the flywheel or the starter?

Re: Starter Help!!!!

The gear reduction starters have 11 teeth, and the old style OEM starters have 9 teeth.

These starters "are interchangeable".

Starters that run with the key off after cranking,,,,,,,,Most common problem is low battery voltage, or faulty sticking solonoid.

Re: Starter Help!!!!

You should be able to pull the starter and turn the motor by hand/wrench and look at the flywheel without pulling the motor. Most boats anyway.

Re: Starter Help!!!!

I'll do that. What should I be looking for? Probably just damaged teeth? Thanks for all the help.

Re: Starter Help!!!!

You can't shim the starter closer to the flywheel, only farther away (unless the starter is already shimmed). Shims don't go under the bolts, they go between the starter housing and the engine block. The pinion gear on the starter has teeth that are tapered a bit at the outer end. This helps align the pinion with the flywheel so those surfaces will normally be shiny. Check for chipped or broken flywheel and pinion teeth. A weak battery or starter solenoid will not allow the pinion to fully engage the flywheel, hence the grinding. Lots of things to verify before digging into the flywheel.

If you see anything like this you need a flywheel and starter.
