i have a 1981 johnson 9.9....
the starter pawl broke. (the thin piece of plastic that makes it return to position once the throttle is returned to idle) if you know this motor, its just a piece of red plastic, and at retail the part is maybe $8. but, in order to replace it, i have to pull the flywheel (according to my calculations.) i could just tape it off, but then i cant advance the throttle to WOT. so.... what should i do? break it off for good so that it cannot engage at all? (no neutral safety position) suck it up and pull the flywheel and replace it?

Re: starter pawl

yeah, that's what i'm thinking. as long as i don't have to mess with timing or anything because i pulled the flywheel

Re: starter pawl

this may be a dumb question, but can't really screw anything up by just removing the flywheel can i? i have a steering wheel puller

'mornin' whosmatt,

Your steeringwheel puller may do the trick. Just don't grab the flywheel by the edge. use the holes in the flywheel

As to messing-things-up, the shaft & flywheel are keyed. Flywheel will only fit if lined-up correctly. This will be obvious once you have the flywheel removed.

Be sure to torqeu the flywheel nut correctly when you put it back on. If it's not torqued enough, there is an increased risk of sheering the key.

That's about the only potential problem that I can foresee.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!
