I have a 96 Volvo 3.0 GS. I need to remove the starter to have it tested/reworked. I have not been able to remove the inboard bolt on the starter. The bolt is a 9/16 but because the space is so tight and the bolt head is right up against the housing I have not been able to get a socket or a wrench on it. I will appreciate any advise.

Mark

There's 3 or 4 small bolts holding the flywheel cover plate in place.... Remove the plate,+ you can get a wrench on the bolt that holds the starter....

Re: starter removal tips?

Thanks for the replies. I went to Sears yesterday and asked for "Thin Wall socket". Clerk didn't know of any. (I know they make 'um, he was not aware). Might have to go to MacTools or Snap On truck. I'll look for the 3 or 4 bolts to the flywheel cover. That sounds like the ticket. I'll keep ya posted. Thanks again for the help!

Mark

Could just buy a regular socket, and grind the hell out of it.

Scott..

Re: starter removal tips?

I have replaced over 200 marine starters,
this will be a long reply.

Remove the flywheel cover, 1/4 ratchet with
7/16 socket, 6 small bolts, center bolts may
be hard to reach.
Now, a 9/16 socket will fit on outside starter bolt. Remove starter.
There are two starter options, standard - big
and heavy - $135. or gear reduction - strong, but
light weight, $165. At any ships store-not a
Merc dealer.

Go to a Merc dealer, and buy a 3/8 starter bolt
with a reduced head size - 1/2 inch not the 9/16
you just removed. Grind 1/8 inch off the flange
on bolt head for easy clearance.

Replace flywheel cover before starter - "Option" -
cut 3 inches off end of cover, on starter end.
You will never have a bolt problem again.

If starter is hard to reach - tie a small rope
on starter - run up between exhaust manifold
and engine block - have an extra man on rope,
to relive weight, so you can work with one hand.

If possible, run a tap up threads in block,
put anti-size on bolt threads.
Have fun Jerry

Re: starter removal tips?

Thanks very much for the advice. Removed the flywheel housing and completed starter removal. Now I'm off to the tester/rebuilder on Monday.
I will keep you posted after I get the results.
Also, I tore the gasket on the flywheel cover. Any thoughts on making a gasket.

Thanks Again!

Don't worry about the gasket... That's a dry cavity....

Re: starter removal tips?

Got the starter tested. Bad starter. Rebuild was $100. Put it back together and fired it up. Cool! Question - what's the best way to avoid corrosion/shorts at the battery post, engine ground, and starter connections. Also, is my rebuilt starter pretty reliable - what kind of life should I expect in general?

Thanks Very Much To Everybody!
