Re: starter removal tips?
I have replaced over 200 marine starters,
this will be a long reply.

Remove the flywheel cover, 1/4 ratchet with
7/16 socket, 6 small bolts, center bolts may
be hard to reach.
Now, a 9/16 socket will fit on outside starter bolt. Remove starter.
There are two starter options, standard - big
and heavy - $135. or gear reduction - strong, but
light weight, $165. At any ships store-not a
Merc dealer.

Go to a Merc dealer, and buy a 3/8 starter bolt
with a reduced head size - 1/2 inch not the 9/16
you just removed. Grind 1/8 inch off the flange
on bolt head for easy clearance.

Replace flywheel cover before starter - "Option" -
cut 3 inches off end of cover, on starter end.
You will never have a bolt problem again.

If starter is hard to reach - tie a small rope
on starter - run up between exhaust manifold
and engine block - have an extra man on rope,
to relive weight, so you can work with one hand.

If possible, run a tap up threads in block,
put anti-size on bolt threads.
Have fun Jerry
