Starter stays engaged

Hi all,

As soon as I turn on my batteries my motor starts to crank?

New battery
new points cap/rotor
Starter
Solenoid Assist (slave)
What could this be caused by?

Alternator?
Crossed wire on Slave?

Please any advice

Sounds like your solenoid is stuck, what kind of boat is it?

Hi,

Its a 1989 Bayliner Ciera with the 5.8
I have replaced the

starter
Solenoid Assist ( slave)
points
Plugs
THe Coil

Is it possible I have a crossed wire on the solenoid assist or Coil?

Absolutely. I have helped a couple people get their wiring fixed up. Sometimes having the wrong slave solenoid is enough to cause the problem. While they all may look alike, the insides are different.

Couple of questions;

What style starter do you have, the type with a solenoid mounted on the starter, or the type with a remote solenoid (movable pole shoe)?

Have you checked to see if the start wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid is hot at all times, or is it only hot when the key is turned to the start position?

Look at your slave solenoid. Are the small terminals marked S and I ????

Yes the old one is the new one is facing backwards so I will pull and verify ( it did this with the old one sporadically)

On the slave solenoid, you should have a yellow/red wire to the S terminal, and a Purple/blue wire going to the I terminal.
If you do, put the shifter in forward or reverse (Just to engage the neutral safety switch) and turn on the battery switch and see if it continues to crank. Make sure the prop is clear, if it does crank over, the prop will be turning too.

well the new Solenoid slave doesn't have a S or a 1 and I ended up overtightening on one of the posts so lol I will be putting in my old one as I did end up replacing the starter so could that have caused the staying engaged bad old starter ? I did have iut checked at oreilly's and it failed

If you have the proper solenoid, keep in mind it needs a good ground to operate. Make sure it's mounted properly. The base is the ground.

That starter solenoid is a real bugger to access, use two nuts on the big post, run the first one down and just snug it, then put your cables on and use two wrenches, one on each nut to pinch the cable tight between, that way your not stressing the post and less like to break it.

Thanks for tip will do that if I have to get another one hoping the old one is still good and it was the starter causing the issue or something else

wanted to thank everyone for there input. Finally got her going I believe it was the starter and then a faulty or wrong Solenoid assist. I pout old one back in and the engaging stopped and she fired right up. Now to try and fig out the timing part

Don what does it mean if it still cranks while in gear and key off??
