i've pulled up some of the wierdest things while fishing. lawn chairs, a barnicle covered rod and reel, and a tire that fit my wifes car. no rim, just the tire. it wasn't dry rotted and i got 30k miles out of it on the car! also retrieved nets, anchors etc but...large plastic coffee mugs, carpet runners, a box fan. so what is the strangest thing YOU have ever reeled in?

Re: strangest catches...

I caught a softball sized chunk of porous rock one time. It had a few holes in its surface and my spoons hook found one. It almost felt like a lazy fish as I reeled it in on light line and a 7' light action spinning rod. I joked to my buddy "I got a 3 pound Rockfish!" as I boated my catch:D. Earlyer this year my dad caught a diving duck, I think a coot, while bass fishing. It was hooked in the beak as if it bit his lure and my nephew took a pic of him holding it before releasing it. dad said the little bugger put up a pretty good fight!

I pulled up a 5 hp motor in a small shrimp trawl. If only that would have been 5 pounds of shrimp.....

A plastic 1 gallon bucket. Line caught the handle. Thought I was pulling up a Great White on that 4/0 Penn reel.

Also caught a sunken tug boat out of Ft. Pierce, Fl. I had to let that one go, though...too big to keep (over the limit, only 1 tug per person per season :D)

Re: strangest catches...

top of my head I'd say someone else's line.... lots of it... and it fought back.

Retrieved half a spool of line and had a keeper striped bass on the end of it. :D

Wonder how long he'd been dragging it around since he broke off, but it was his lucky day, revived and let him go. ;)

I was trolling for stripers at night and BAM something grabbed my lure! I fought it all the way to the boat and as I pulled it up I saw a huge 16" gaping mouth jumping out of the water at me, scared the crap out of me,,, until I realized it was an open WalMart bag

(stupid litter bugs.....)

50' shore power cord on my catfish pole. Sure thought I had a 50 pounder.

what in the world size line/tackle are you using? lol, if I tried reeling in a tire from underwater, I'd snap my line in a heartbeat.

110# test Kevlar! pulled the tire up the incline of the boat ramp we were fishing off of at 4am. had a little air trapped in it.
i use 80# spiderwire on the smaller poles. could catch an 11" snapper...or an 11' hammerhead, ya never know :D.

4/0 or larger hooks, 60# min leader wire/swivels.

when i got the anchor, i hooked the broken rope a few feet above the chain...had to work to get it free but...hey, can't beat a free anchor.

Re: strangest catches...

The absolute funniest thing I ever caught was a buddies fishing line when he was fishing from the bow and I was on the stern. I pulled it up slowly because I figured it was his line. After I tied it off on a cleat, I tugged hard on it and let him fight the back of the boat for 30 minutes while the other 6 people aboard cheered him on...:D

Re: strangest catches...

Here's one ala-Fireman style

I didn't catch it, but my buddy did. We were out trolling on a tuna sport boat and he had to make a run to the head. One of the deckhands grabbed his rod, cut off the lure and tied a 5 gallon bucket on his line. He was all settled in, in the head, as the 5 gallon bucket was chucked in the sea... With the reel clicker screaming, someone started banging on the door, yelling "Get out of there, you're HOOKED-UP! Took him a long time to reel in 200 yards of line, with a 5 gallon bucket attached, with the boat steaming along at trolling speed...

A 10 lb rock while jigging for halibut, another time winched up the anchor from 250 ft (halibut fishing again) I had a commercial long line caught on it.started hauling it in, found the broken off end, hauled in another 300 yards and gave up. it makes the best sinking crab trap line there is.

A dead deer that had apparently committed suicide by jumping off the cliff above about a week or so earlier.

Several rods and a seagull. Dang bird grabbed my bait when I wasn't looking and started to fly off! Never fought something ABOVE the water like that ...

Re: strangest catches...

I caught a seagull in a Bluefish blitz in October. I carefully reeled it to the boat and dropped my rod, grabbed the line to pull it into the boat. Of course it tried to fly away!.... so now i'm pulling it back down like a runaway kite:redface: I got him down on the deck and unhooked as he bit the crap out of me until I released him. The birds would chase and dive on our jigs if they saw them near the surface, so you had to let them drop before they dove on them.
