just throw a popsicle stick under the stringer.....if the wood in the stringer isnt cut quite right...thats ok....just fill the gap with your bedding compound

Ya really, hahahha a little over the top , big time. I guess all them outside style jacuzzie tubs I built back in the day and only used a chopstrand gun that were made to hold water would not hold water. Last I checked the only water I was loosing was from evaporation from the sun. I don't know why anyone would make such a post saying all this about fiberglass. He must just not like fiberglass boats wood is all I can think. It is not the product, it is how it is used :)

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

I am replacing stringers and deck in 85 sea ray seville. I have found alot of good information on this site.
I was wondering if the stringers need to be covered with csm before installing and tabbing to hull for
waterproofing?
My plan was to coat stringers with 2 coats of resin install then tab with two layers of 1708
first tab 4 inches up stringer and out on hull second 2 inches up stringer and out on hull then go over top
of stringer with 1 layer of 1708.Thanks for the help
.

Yup.. for simplicity you should resin coat and mat your stringers ( I dont know if 2 coats of resin will do this because you did not say What kind of ply your using.. but yes you drink your wood.. then put CSM over it ( Its called Proper prep for stringers or any prepped wood going into the boat ).

Do not try the lapping of 1708 across 3/4" stringers .. the bigger stringers you can do this .. not the single 3/4" stringers.

You can always Add Double stringers if you like ..in areas ..

Tabbing your Stringers is 1.5 oz mat then layers of 1708..then final with 1.5 mat again to top it off.

NO WAXED RESIN NEEDED .. NO gel or overcoating needed..nothing ..

Forget about WAX in Every Way .. You do NOT need waxed resin or gel. Forget about WAX !! Stop with the Wax thing..

Never Use Wax in resin or Gel .. period ..

I might start a thread on the Wax thingy .. its so 80's ..

Steve the drawing I provided at the very beginning of your thread shows you exactly how to fabricate your stringers. Just like YD is explaining it. You could actually cut out a layer of CSM and still be good to go. the 1708 is where you get your strength.

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

I installed stringers today using pl also used pl for fillets. Was wanting to know if pl should be sanded before glassing?
Looks like fillets are bubbling up somewhat not bad.I used spoon dipped in aceton to round fillets. Thank all of you on
this site if it wasn't for the info here i wouldn't have even started this project.

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

NOTE: PL must cure at least 72 hours before attempting to glass over it. The bubbling will not be a problem as long as you make sure it's cured before glassing over it.

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

What would be the best way to install engine mount? Engine is a 3.0 merc i have engine mount built it is
2 2x6 with 1/2 ply on top all pl together. The mount is attached to bulkhead and stringers should bulkhead and stringer
be tabbed to hull before installing mount? Once mount is installed the area where mount meets bulkhead and stringer
will covered by the mount.Mount was also tabbed to hull, stringers and bulkhead originally.

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

Steve, when I took my motor mount out the stringers were tabbed and the bulkhead under the mount to the hull...then the mount was tabbed to them again.

The downfall to this is I cut everything to original size and had to modify the mount after in the corners as the manufacturer never did much in the corners for tabbing and I made sure everything was waterproof

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

When tabbing stringers to hull using 1708 why should your first layer be with 1.5 oz csm? Is the csm on
the back of the 1708 not enough?

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

The amount of CSM on the 1708 is not really enough to do the job in all situations, the layer of 1.5 oz helps ensure you get a good bond.

Re: stringer fiberglassing and waterproofing

I started capping stringers yesterday with 1.5 csm i have some small air pockets at top of stringer. Should this be
ground and reglassed? I am going to finish capping stringers today and will post pics.
