Re: Stuck Motor

On e-bay right now they have a drive for you not to much money, and it's full mechanical shift has the cable.

Will fit and if the motors good, just put it on and go.

Need help just ask, i can walk you thru it if you like.

Or i can give you a link to a guy near me that might have the drive, he won't cheat you.

Good luck !

Re: Stuck Motor

How can i know what happened inside your drive. I can tell you how to check.

I can tell you how to take it apart. You got the eyeballs on it and the hands to touch it.

You have a manual ??

When you get one try to get original factory, oem manual seloc is second best.

E-bay has a guy selling them around 70 bucks you need 85 and under to 83 maybe, cause YOU NEVER TOLD ME WHAT YEAR THE BOAT IS !!!!

Look on the transom and the last 2 numbers what are they ?

And pretty please post the year. Thank you.

Re: Stuck Motor

its a 1981 OMC 400 STERN DRIVE. the drive is white in color, if that matters.
i dont have a manual.
when its in "N" i can spin the prop easy, when in "F" or "R" the prop locks up
and i cant even spin the drive shaft.
i want to fix it but im not rich, its even my brothers boat i just like using more than he does. its kind of crappy boat we had to build all the insides seats, floors and such. we got to use it about 5 times befor it broke but its a good running motor and i think thats all tha matters.

Re: Stuck Motor

i read that thread, but when my drive locked it shut the motor down,
just like the motor itself sezied. its says his motor kept running.
i going to remove the 4 14mm bolts on the under side of the lower foot tomorrow and check it out.

Re: Stuck Motor

You want take the the screws out of the top of the drive. I posted that to show you how to do it.

You want to pull the water pump and see the gears in there.

And the link will show you how.

Re: Stuck Motor

You could not have read the whole thread in the end the guy had a seized drive as you have, and i think it's in the upper do what you want.

But if it was my drive i would follow # 6 and drop the bottom bye taking the top screws out the whole thing will fall the lower and exhaust shroud together.

Pull the water pump and inspect the damage to the gears.

Good luck let us know whats what.

Re: Stuck Motor

ok i got down to the water pump, and both spline gears are good and the water impeller looks to be new. i still cant see any gears yet, but its not the lower foot thats locked up because i can spin the prop in gear now. I still cant turn the main drive shaft in or out of gear. it is something in the upper unit because the i cant turn the ball gear (also new) for the upper drive.
that was kinda of easy too. so how do i get in there to those gears?

Re: Stuck Motor

When the water pump came out the 2 shafts and a pinion gear in a bearing carrier should all have came out.

Then you can see the ball gear And shaft, inside the upper drive.

Re: Stuck Motor

Thats the top of the pump it has to come out hook a wire or something in the hole, and get it out.

Put a weight on something and use it as a puller.

I spun it to break the seal, but try not to break it. When you do buy a water pump kit you can buy it with the housing, thats the housing.

Understand grass hooper???

Re: Stuck Motor

You know what a slapper is we use it to pull dents in cars, have one or make one with a good strong wire bent on one end into a hook and the other bent so when you pull the weight to you it stops.

Don't pry on it between the side and the housing and crack the aluminum.

Re: Stuck Motor

so far its been a pain trying to get it out. was it to come out with the impeller shaft at the same time?

Re: Stuck Motor

Yes it was but sometimes they come out like yours.

There is a c clamp that must have rusted off.

And the new water pump kit will have, you would know that if you had a manual.

Not chiding you, i'm impressed , you paid attention to what info i have been imparting to you, keep going, you did understand about the slapper and pulling the water pump housing out?

Don't damage the upper drive casing understand ??

When you do get it out you will see the problem i can guess what it is, and probably be right, but you have the eyeballs on it and are touching it, so you tell me after what damage is in the upper and what parts we will discuss to get latter.

Now get it out grasshopper, theres still a long way to go before it kisses water again that drive.

Re: Stuck Motor

oh yeah im a good at listening. you talking about like a slide hammer?
its ranning on me today so i cant work. ill give it a try in a bit.
im hoping its just a berring, the gear just under that cover wher the oil fill plug is (the one that is connected to the ball gear) has some play in it.
so it goes deeper than that.
i WILL keep you up to date.
i couldnt with out you so-far so thanks to you.
