Go to the bottom of this web page and order a manual. You check the water pump by measuring the water pressure and temperature, or by visually checking it by dropping the lower unit and taking it apart. If you go that far, replace it. It is a simple procedure. You remove the bolts, (location and number are shown in the manual), disconnect the shift rod connection (shown in the manual) and lower the foot down. The water pump sits on top of the lower unit with the drive shaft sticking through it.

While you have the lower unit off you can check to see if the gear shift problem is in the remote, the linkage, or the gearcase.

I would add that the connection for that shift rod is under the carbs and does not appear to look like it would do much to help the lower unit removal. You need not push the rod all the way out. Have a magnet handy for nut retreval. If you are in the top, you may want to pull and clean the carbs at the same time. Use pressured air and clean fuel with some carb spray. Clean the line as well. Use vaseline on the impeller and make sure you install it the direction it will spin prior to closing it up. Also would be a good idea to check the lower unit for metal in the oil with the magnet and by feel. If you are having a shifting problems, it may be the shifter, not the lower unit. Take the cable off the shifter and see if you can move it with your hand. If so, you may have a jamed cable. If not, post again.

You can go to www.brownspoint.com and register. You can get .pdf diagram and part no for just about every part for that motor.
Not a good substitute for a manual, but quite useful.
Don't know your year, but it covers 1977 -2000
If you have trouble registering.. e-mail me
andrewkafp@yahoo.com.au
I will give you some more info :D :D
