Go to the bottom of this web page and order a manual. You check the water pump by measuring the water pressure and temperature, or by visually checking it by dropping the lower unit and taking it apart. If you go that far, replace it. It is a simple procedure. You remove the bolts, (location and number are shown in the manual), disconnect the shift rod connection (shown in the manual) and lower the foot down. The water pump sits on top of the lower unit with the drive shaft sticking through it.<br /><br />While you have the lower unit off you can check to see if the gear shift problem is in the remote, the linkage, or the gearcase.
