I am looking to build a swim platform for my 1977 Crestliner Cursader 550. I bought a on platform swim ladder thinking that I could just mount it onto the transom and from what I can tell I can't. Is there a thread on here that shows how to build one well? I tried searching but didn't come across anything for a single side swim platform.

There are ready made ones in the market that comes with the brackets and the stainless steel tubes. Even if you are set on building your own, I would still suggest taking a look at these in your local marine supply stores to get an idea of how to build your own.

Post a picture of your boat and highlight the area you want to mount the platform to

In Ontario there is not many boating stores, I know the only one in my city closed in October. As for ready made ones, all I can find that do not come with a ladder are in the US and with import taxes and the exchange rate it would be dumb to buy one. If I lived in the US I might buy one but I am thinking I want it to not have those bad looking tubes sticking out.

I wasn't suggesting necessarily that you buy one. Only to see one and study the design to use it as a starting point for your.

Oh sorry took it the wrong way, I have looked around and what I see is mostly the ones as you say with the tubes. I have seen some out at the lake and launch where they didn't have those ugly tubes. I think Arch built some on miss morgan IIRC, I think I might take a look there in the build thread and see what I can find.

for what it's worth, we use the swim platform on the boat all the time. At the beach or in the middle of the lake. IMHO it would be a worth while project.

Build one out of 3/4 inch plywood - from the under side. use a small piece of dimensional lumber or micro lam, on the back of platform. to bolt to transom from the inside of boat ad some triangle knees to the under side. than glass it up, and coat with dura bank.

That's a great application for starboard or teak lumber . Both can be done with woodworking tools.

Stainless steel tubing with flattened ends will work for the supports

1+ on googling designs to get ideas.

Starboard is available in AS for antislip and wider selection of sizes than teak.

I guess my real question is not so much the platform as it is the method of attaching it to the transom. I would like as little holes as possible since it is a wood one in what I think is good condition. I am thinking I want to do either teak or maple as the wood choice with just slats going across. That part should be simple once I source teak if not off to the woods to get a maple tree.

My platform is being built using most of these ideas. Using 3/4 plywood, I shaped to fit the boat. 2x4's are laid in shape on bottom and the rear is tapered to allow the boat name to be displayed when finished.

A telescoping ladder will be mounted on the driver side allowing a side entry point (away from prop etc).

The entire thing will be glassed twice with cloth and resin then painted with enamel and a non-slip additive for the topside.

6 lag bolts in the rear connecting hull to the platform and then 4 brackets made from 1-1/2" steel angle will be shaped to form a triangle bracket. Brackets will be powder coated not painted.

I'll put two 1/4" bolts in each bracket thru the hull of the boat (grade 8 bolts are more than enough) and two lag bolts into the platform from the bottom up.

My platform is going to double as a swim platform and a fishing platform. I'm installing a removable seat pedestal in the center to give more fishing seats. My youngest son has already claimed it (knowing he has to wear his life jacket the whole time).

This will also give me easier access to landing larger fish.

The ones I have worked on used stainless steel lag bolts and 3M5200 or 4200 type sealant. #14 stainless screws were used in pairs at the the bottom of the stainless steel support legs ( tubing )

My well craft had the wood removed in those areas for added sealing of the wood with fiberglass. If you can get to the inside you might be able to cut out the wood with a hole saw or similar and it with fill with epoxy & could also add some metal. That may be overkill also. The experts hare may have some added thoughts.
