SX Trim Pump Questions...

Was working on my boat today to prep for dumping it in next weekend. I have an SX Drive with the vertical trim pump.

The drive has 100% motion up and down, but when putting the drive down, the pump makes a whining noise. I got out my drive manual and topped off the fluid level. The previous owner looks like they used ATF fluid. I used hyd. fluid. When I top off the fluid level, I get one time of putting the drive down with no whining noise. Lift the drive back up and all is good. Lower the drive the second time and the whine comes back. I tried cycling the pump with the fill cap off to bleed it out but no luck, still have whining noise. Am I just bleeding this the wrong way or has the ATF and Hyd fluid contaminated everything?

If the pump was bad, I wouldn't have full range of motion with the drive would I?

Forgot to add that I no leaks anywhere.

Ayuh,.... So what's the problem,...

An electric motor spinnin' a hyd. pump, is gonna whine...

The down-stroke is also the low pressure side, 'n it whines when it unloads...

Air is what typically causes trim pumps to make noises. Tilt the drive all the way up and fill the resevoir level with the fill plug. Put the cap back on and run the drive up and down a minimum of 5 times and re check the oil level.
If it starts making noise after 2 cycles, put it full up and check the level. Repeat till clear.

If that doesn't cure the problem, then you need to do some pressure testing to find out if one of the valves is failing.

Don, the cap for the fill is not a bleeder valve. After I fill with the drive up, the manual states to leave the plug out. I tried that and it dumps fluid out of the fill hole. With that being said, should I leave the cap on and try as you stated? How would I bleed the system with the cap on?

Thanks so much!

Never said it was.

.
What are you using for as manual? Does it say Seloc or Clymer on it? The OEM manual says to put the plug back in then run it up and down to bleed.

There is an air gap above the fluid level in the reservoir.

Don, my manual is the Seloc manual.

If in fact you have to put the plug in to bleed the system, man I feel dumb now!

Don, my manual is the Seloc manual.

And another wrong information mark against Seloc, and the hits just keep coming.

Here is from the Volvo manual.

Don,

I followed your procedure and ran the drive up and down. The noise got a little better but it sounds nothing like the up function. Question being, did my dump ***** contaminate the system when I put hydraulic fluid in the pump? Should I drain the entire system? If so, can that be achieved by taking the fill cap off, lowering the drive and unhooking the lines and let it gravity drain?

Don't know, never mixed different type of oil to find out what happens.

You do realize they make different sounds going up than down. Down is a low pressure system, up is high pressure, so they do sound different as Bondo pointed out earlier.

Is this boat new to you?

Yes sir, new boat to me as of July last year. I ran the drive up and down tonight and the motor kicked out a few times. Maybe I should make a youtube video and post a link so you could hear?

I went out to the boat and made this video. When the video starts, the drive is going down. Then I move the drive up so you can hear the difference.

It sounds exactly as it should... The added whine is when it bottoms out...

Sorry for doubting you bondo. I had no idea that the low end should be that loud. I thought (theres the problem) that the low side should sound similar to the high end because I have never heard an I/O trim pump that loud.

Ayuh,.... That's how ya tell what it's doin', especially if ya run without a trim gauge,....

When goin', Up,...
Ya run it up til it Overloads, 'n struggles, then tap the down button a couple of times to Unload the valvin'...

When goin', Down,...
It gets to the bottom, 'n it Unloads, screamin' like that, 'n ya know it's fully Down... ;)

Sounds ok, just like my SX drive.
