I recently installed this motor on my boat and just bought the tach wiring harness.I installed the harness, started the motor and rpm gauge does not work.i tested the purple and grey wires with test light, the purple works but grey does not.i tested the grey wire coming from stator soon as motor starts test light, lights up.i'm assuming this is the wire that would send signal to tach?Took control box apart and tested grey wire inside and nothing.Any idea as what i can do next?

Run a test wire from the engine terminal block to your tach and connect it in place of the grey wire. If the tach responds, you have a break in the harness wire or your rectifier is not working.

You must have the positive and negative wires from the ignition connected and the switch must be in the run position. When you first turn the key to run, the tach should snap to a zero reading if the - and + black and purple wires are correctly installed.

All other gauges work properly and the tach does go to 0 when key is turned on.But when i crank the motor and start it i do not get anything?
If the rectifier is bad, will the motor still run?

sounds like you reg/rec is out..........look in the faq's for the test procedure or your manual....the only test i have saved is the old rec test for the small round rec....this one is posted by spinnerbait nut but is written by joe reeves.....2 great guys.

if you have the small one this will work---i dont know about the one under the flywheel

i do believe when working correctly the grey wire should put out 9-11 v dc while running....if you are checking it with a mm.

if you have the round reg/rec you will fry it if you accidentally hook up the battery backwards.....even a spark (barley touched).......it might be the same with the newer versions i dont know.

The unregulated rectifier looks like the one shown here:

If you have power tilt and trim you will most likely have a water cooled regulated rectifier mounted on the top of the engine, behind the flywheel and between the cylinder banks.

there is not a grey wire coming from rectifier.the tach is darn near brand new,and it worked fine with other motor just before i switched them.
