taxes?

Been copying the mail on another thread and not wanting to hijack the thread had some thoughts that I have heard and have thought about for some time.<br /> What about a national sales tax or possibly a flat tax. Myself I think that a national sales tax would look pretty good. Most likely would have to be adjusted for the times that we are at war but it would even the playing field.<br />Any other ideas?

In theory, it sounds good. I am soo tired of the IRS and all of the paperwork, etc. Now comes the hard questions, such as what would be exempt? Should food be taxed ? Should Ted Kennedy( a multi-millionaire) pay the same price for a loaf of bread as a working single mother of three ? Would medication be taxed ? Should senior citizens pay the same price as a 30 year old single man making 200K per year ? How could we possibly get millions of people who currently pay no taxes at all on this program ? A simple or flat tax sounds great to those of us that are currently paying for ourselves and everyone else, but the people that contribute nothing and their representatives will have a cow over it. I can hear the cries now " **** Cheney and Halliburton are paying less so St Francis Orphanage can pay more "

That was one of the reasons that I posted it just paid fourth quarter. I know it was a month early but got it out of the way.<br /> <br /> We would have a lot of squealing but I think that it could be worked out to everyone’s satisfaction if we could get around a lot of the BS and look it over.

That's a dangerous statement W1. What you advocate is the doctrine of Marx/Lenin. <br /><br />In a national sales tax scenario a preselected group of commodities should be exempt from sales tax. Most all of the things that simply keep us walking upon the face of the earth. Every thing beyond that should be taxed and if I remember my math 101 correctly, the more you make, the more you will buy and the more that you buy the more tax you will pay. They could even make the first XXXX # of dollars that you pay for expensive but necessary items exempt from tax, ie, automobiles etc. But those dirty old rich sob's would get that same benefit.<br /><br />Get off this leftist bandwagon of the more you have the higher the rate you should pay.

Everything is taxed anyway....Those who can afford to slip through the loopholes are going to do better....But....If ya can't ......Ya gotta pay......Cut the loopholes out .....Those who can afford to pay more will......Those who can't .....Will pay anyway....JK

Boomyal, your response was exactly why I posted the way I did. Did I ever say that it was wrong for the mother of three to pay the same as Ted Kennedy......no I did not. It should have given you a clue where I came from when I said Ted Kennedy....as opposed to Bush.....or Chenney. With many of our lawmakers running and hiding every single time something "rough" comes up, I just don't picture them having the "balls" to deal with something like this. As soon as someone say's something like I said in my first post....they will be running for cover.

I have to wonder what in the world WMD has to do with tax reform ? BOTH a republican president AND a democratic president said that IRAQ had WMD's. Even the last democratic presidential hopeful said that Iraq had WMD's......so what does that mean ? Clinton, Kerry, and Bush were all in agreement....so where is the debate there ?

Has anyone heard the term "divide and conquer" Has anyone seen through the silly games our lawmakers play with us ? Has anyone figured out that it is us against them ? Let's see, on one hand we have people like Ted Kennedy say that oil is evil and we need alternative energy....yet he OWNS an oil company and when someone wanted to put windmills ( no pollution, no foreign dependance) in HIS back yard, he said he11 no! On the other hand we have Bush talking about security and wire taps.....yet our borders are still wide open and millions of people a year come here with NO inspection....kind of makes you wonder.<br />If the average american, that is paying for everything in this country, would get an attorney, start a company of their own, and claim every single tax exeption they could.....things would change....all he11 would be breaking loose.

There is none ....Wateryone....I get pissed when posters make a "Quantum Leap" as soon as anyone questions any real change to the way taxes are collected federally......Flat tax, (no loopholes ) automatically brands an individual as a non American "Pinko".....The RICH love loopholes.....Regardless of political affiliation, religion, gender , sexual orientation....or what their dog eats....There must be a way to simplify the way taxes are collected...IMHO....My wmd comment was "out of line" ......I just don't think "W's" "Sorry, I didn't have all the right information" flies with me......I think that he & his appointed cronies are arrogant.....The world view of this country is that we are arrogant & know what is best for everyone.....Sorry again.....Wrong thread.....Mea Culpa.....JK

of course then the states that dont have state income tax but have higher salestax to cover for it would have to start a state income tax... not fun.. I like being able to buy a vehicle out of state for cheaper taxes and not have state income taxes, even if I do pay 2 percent higher on sales tax local then most places.

What is needed is a "Consumption Tax" on every penny you spend. No exceptions except interest recieved.<br />Personal Income Tax has to be reduced or iliminated to compensate of course.<br />The end result is: you pay no more, but EVERYBODY pays. That is the crunch.<br />Set it at 10-15%.<br />It is the most fair and just tax system you will have.<br />Every bludger pays his share<br />Every dodger pays his share<br />Every honest person pays no more than his share.(which is not the case now)<br />The more you earn, the more you spend, and when you spend you pay a small %.<br />Very simple. I love it. And a lot of Countries have it, and the best ones are the ones with no exemptions.<br />Plays hell on the black money too, because as soon as they buy/spend.... bingo....10% thankyou.<br />If you believe the people on the big incomes (never salary or wages) pay their share, forget it....it dosn't happen. It does with a Consumption Tax though.<br />And what was amusing about these discussion back in 2000 (down here anyway) was that the masses of middle income salary/wage earners who were being taxed to death were the ones who didn't want the system changed.<br />It has never been fair-er.<br />And that is coming from a poor sod that has to collect this tax every quarter, forward it to the Tax Office, all at my expence, all 6hrs of it, and suffer the audits, and the corrections/adjustments etc....but it is still a fair tax and good for everybody.<br />Cheers<br />Phillip

I think instead of taxing something at a certain rate, then giving exemptions we should make a flat rate above and beyond the regular taxes. If every person over age 18 pays a flat $5. This would add up.<br /><br />Of course we would have to do something about the person making 50% to count that money, then someone else 50% of the remainder to go deposit it and so on. But those people would of course pay income tax and there you go.<br /><br />Seriously if everyone paid $5 each year, a flat rate that will never be allowed to increase...and the money earmarked for nothing but national debt or defense or something important not to include general funds or operating expenses for government offices.

I keep hearing everyone going for the flat tax, one of the provisions of the flat tax is no deduction for interest on your mortgage. Everyone raise there hand here, who is for that.

Ok. reality check.<br />Voltaire a french philosopher had an interesting thought.He said that getting taxes from people is like plucking quills from a goose.You try to get the most from the ones that squeal the least.<br />In other words,the ones without representation or friends are the easiest pickings.that is why the idea of a flat tax does not work<br />As for a progressive tax system.It really is not left wing or socialism.It is getting the money where you can find it.

There's a pretty good book on this subject. Fair Tax <br /><br />Boomyals description is just about right on. The idea is to tax above the poverty level only. Poverty level being an arbitrary number somewhere around $24,000/year if it were to go into effect today. This is a pretty good book that makes a lot of sense if you have the time to check it out.
