Why is it that if you are traveling inside a van/cube truck going 70 mph and you jump up that you do not move to the rear of said vehicle?

Physics..... you are already traveling at 70 mph along with the van.... why are you jumping? Sit back down and buckle that seat belt before I pull over!!! :D

Now pitch a baseball out of that van and if you toss the ball forward the speed of the pitch is added to the van's speed.

Its because you are moving at the same speed as the van. You will be moved back but the increment is unnoticable. The reason i say this is because you jump you have gravity acting on you and the speed at which your moving forward will slow because of the pull of gravity. The baseball will slow down because of air resistance. This is the exact reason we have seat belts because if we wouldn't we would keep moving at the vans speed when it has hit the brick wall.

What Bob_VT said. You're already moving that that speed.

It's the same reason you can jump up off the ground without the earth whizzing under you at over 1000mph.

How fast are you traveling when you hit the dashboard of the van when it hits a concrete barrier head on?

Edit: Whenever I have kids (or adults for that matter) that don't buckle up, I head along at about 5 MPH and slam on the brakes . . . They learn quickly. If I am nice and tell them that I am going to tech them something just before I slam on the brakes I point out the window and say "Hey! Check that out!" Works every time ;)

now if the driver where to hit the gas or the breaks changing the vehical speed during the time that you were suspened in the air you would move in relationship to the van. cause the speed of the van has changed while your speed stayed constant.

In the car, you are simply not 'up' enough to make a difference. Inertia will keep you moving forward, and there is little air resistance (you are in a bubble - the air is moving forward with you. The 'outside' air is resisting the windshield.

Gravity doesn't factor into this directly - it is a up/down force relative to your motion, and unless you are going up a hill it will not (directly) affect your forward speed.

Ah.. this brings up the ole question: If you are in an elevator, and its cable snaps - if you jump up just before it hits the bottom, will you land softly?

No. While the elevator will be falling at a high rate of speed, most people jump at a slow rate of speed, therefore you would hit nearly as hard as if you hadn't jumped.

Not quite. Gravity only pulls you down, not backward to slow you down.
Since there is no wind resistance inside the van, your horizontal speed should not slow down. You keep moving forward at the same speed, until a FORCE acts upon your body.
