Re: Ted Williams 7.5 Outboard

your suppose to set the float using an 11/64 drill bit, the float should not be parallel with the carb body, download this e book and you will have the facts you need, http://www.ebooksquad.com/2009/03/02/tecumseh-2-cycle-engine-technician-handbook.html

I would guess your having needle and seat problems to, also you really need to have that carb off the engine and turned upside down to get the float set right, I used a cheap plastic caliper and just took a measurement of the the 11/64 drill bit...I can't deal with the drill bit so well, once you got the float set and bowel back on you should be able to flip the carb back and forth and hear the float open and close,

One last edit this morning, pay close attention to the position of the clip that hold the needle to the float, if not installed in the right direction it can cause the needle valve to change position on the float tang causing the needle to stick, correct orientation is in the Tecumseh pdf manual

Just came back from the lake. One pull and I was headed for my favorite fishing spot. Even when the wind picked up, that ole Ted Williams did the job! I'm now VERY HAPPY! :)

Re: Ted Williams 7.5 Outboard

Question: About a week ago, one of the screws that holds the top cover on fell out. I guess because of the vibrations. This made it almost impossible to start, because the cover somehow got in the way of the starter rope. I put in a new screw, but on the second day out it was loose again. Should I use a lock washer to hold it tight, or use lock-tight to keep it in place. I've been going out in Lake Michigan with my little boat, and really don't want a "no start!!"

I wouldn't use loctite, try some gasket maker, sealer, something that will stay pliable but yet keep things from backing out. I use the the 3m gasket stuff I used on my big outboard's water pump, best thread locker I ever found and I can get it off when I need to.

Re: Ted Williams 7.5 Outboard

Still haven't had to use anything to keep bolt in place, but I think because of the first loose problem, it created another. Darn near broke my thumb when the bolt first fell out, with the rope start kick back. Now at times, when I pull the rope, I get a kick back, and am beginning to get afraid of pulling the rope. Could I have messed up the gears the first time this happened? It doesn't do it all the time, but I fear the think will break my thumb one of these times.

Please define your meaning of the term 'kick back'. are you referring to a misfire of the engine or a mechanical phenomena?

If an engine misfire it is an indication of ignition timing problems. Either maladjustment of the throttle/magneto advance OR a partially sheared flywheel key.

If caused by a maladjustment of the throttle/magneto advance then it needs a 'link & sync'.

In either case you must get it corrected before venturing out on the Great Lakes again!

When I pull the starter/recoil rope, it will sometimes abruptly pull back, causing the rope to pull back into the recoil thing, which pulls my hand back with it. When it does this, the rope handle snaps back and almost breaks my thumb in the process.

That certainly sounds like a description of a motor that is out of time and trying to fire BEFORE TDC.

I think it's time to refer back to what I suggested in my previous post.
