I just install Teleflex Sportsman Tech. It?s hooked up to a 1985 50hp Merc 500 outboard serial number A131168 . It?s hooked up to the cable that comes out of the control box. The white wire is hooked up to the IGN post. The black wire is hooked up to the GND post. The brown wire is hooked up to the SEND post. The calibrate dial is set to P6. If it matters, the light post is not hooked up.

When the motor is off, the tech reads 3k. When I turn the ignition, the tech reads 0K. When I start the motor it read 2.7k ? 3k. When I rev the engine the tech will fluctuate between 3k -7k. All of this is out of the water with the muffs on.

1. My auto tech reads 0k when the key is out of the ignition. Why won?t this zero when the key?s out?

2. I?ve never owned a 2 stroke or an out board. I don?t believe the engine is idling at 3k. That just sounds like a high reading. I?d bet on 2k. Normal, idle for my 6 cyl i/o and my car is about 1.5k ? 1.7k. What should this motor idle at?

3. Is there anything that could cause a high reading?

the tach siginal works on magnetic pulse and to read it it need 12 to activate it when there is no voltage it goes to a neutral possion usally the center of the dial

sorry for the double post but there should be a selector switch on the back to set the tach to 6 pulses

Thanks for the reply Laddies, I've got the selector set to 6P. I don't know if this effect anything, but this motor has a coil for each cylinders (4). I looked through the manuals that I have and I haven’t been able to find out what the normal idle rps should be for this motor. I’m assuming 1.5K. Can anyone confirm? Also, how would I go about adjusting the idle? My Merc 4.3L idles at the same rpms in and out of the water. Should an outboard idle at the same rps in and out of the water?

Thanks again,

Tom

Your engine should idle at 650 to 700 in gear

OK ? I did a bunch of searches. It sounds like I want to adjust the idle stop screw. I looked it up in the Seloc manual that I have. The photo?s aren?t real good on where the idle stop screw. I think it?s the screw I?ve numbered 2. Can anyone confirm this? From what I?ve read, I should not adjust the barrel screw on the throttle cable to adjust the idle. My only other question is, is it really necessary to disconnect the throttle cable to adjust the idle?

Thanks again,

Tom
