Seeing as the membership of the missing plug club is filling up fast, I figure it's time for those of us boat rebuilders to fess up on adding more work where less is needed.. sawing/grinding/punching through their hull (accidentally, of course!). Admit your crime and share your story!

Sadly, I am a member of this esteemed club, having punched through my hull using a floor scraper! I was trying to scrape up some poorly laid fiberglass and learned the hard way.. even poorly laid glass bonds pretty darn well! 4" blade right through the hull!

I had to grind it into an even bigger hole in order to prepare it for re-glassing. Man, never again

I am not a member yet but hey, it is still early. I just got to the foam. There is still a lot of potential for me to send my grinder through the hull, just wait.:D

Was putting my new transom together in 3 layers and got in a hurry with screws. Picked up the 3 inchers and when snugging layer 3 down reached behind me, picked up a long one by accident, threw it on the chuck and bzzzzzzt right through the back of the boat. There's a bright white spot of gelcoat back there as a nice reminder. :)

Guess I'm in the club - here's the proof: ... from the outside

[/IMG] doesn't look so bad fro the inside

Luckily, these things aren't terrible to fix as long as you can get to both sides. But it sure does increase the pucker factor and the desire to obtain some dynamite to end your troubles :D

Is this one of the clubs like "here's your sign"?

Yup, I'm a member. Been one for a few years now. Fortunately, most of us here are only one time offenders ( per boat ) ;)

Yep, I'm a member as well, while grinding out the old glass around the stringers, I sent the gringer right through the hull.... that was no fun to fix.

Looks like this club will fill up fast too, only takes one second of inattention for a grinder to eat a big hole in glass. :D

How ironic, I was installing my bildge pump today and became a member of this elite, err, "more work club".

I installed a new bracket and had the pump in just the right place, secured it, and forgot the bildge pump hose on the ground. I jumped out of the boat, walked around the back of the transom to grab the hose and what did I see.....

I thought I had the bracket high enough to where I was sinking the screw into the transom wood.....Wrong. Oh well, I'll remove the screw and seal with a little marine tex.

May as well add me to the list. Circ saw through the hull in two places. Before even redoing the thing I put 8 screws right through the hull before I realized what was happening.

Count me in! Using a 10" sawzall blade to cut out foam. When it came time to cut the stringer from the forward bulkhead I went at it with the sawzall and same blade. Doh! I thought I was into an extra tough staple, but the end of the blade was actually cutting through the hull. It's a nice clean cut though!

ddriek, you could just use a pan head screw from the outside in with some sealant and a nut, then use another nut to hold the hose on...like putting a stud into the transom! Problem solved! ;)

Re: The through-hull club.. who's a member?

I haven't made a hole by accident (yet). But I can tell you I sure was nervous when drilling holes for the fuel tank fill, tank vent and bilge thru-hull fittings. I measured, and re-measured. Drew the circles exactly where they should be and stepped back to make sure they were not going to interfere with anything that might be added later (like a swim platform). I was so worried that after the hole was drilled something would not align on the inside, or there wouldn't be clearance, etc, that I waited until the next day to be sure my brain was not tired and prone to making silly mistakes.

Apparently being a little paranoid and double and tripple checking before drilling has worked out well for me. :)
