thermostat and housing guestion

I have a 96 merc 350 chevy engine. open water system. Was talking on another post about running or not running a thermostat? Well it seams like they are very important. So i took my housing off last night and inside came out pieces of what i think use to be a thermostat. The housing has a plastic insert that looks like it may have held a littler thermostat? When i got the new one it came in a kit with many gaskets and o rings and a standard looking thermostat. The napa marine man says to remove the plastic liner and put the thermostat in the intake housing groove like the old style ones. Then install the correct gasket and im good to go! Im just thinking about it and is this correct or not? There is also 2 sending units screwed into the housing witch will be on the back side of the thermosat other than the top side with the old style? thanks dan

Yes the cork gasket goes in first next the thermostat goes in followed by the white plastic sleeve !

What if you dont use the white sleeve again? Thats what the marine napa man told me to try? So i hope he knows what hes doing.

DUH ,,,,, They are car parts guys, not marine techs.They probably don't have a clue what you were talking about.
You have to use that white sleeve or the stat won't work

thanks don i would normaly agree with you on that one with advanced and autozones. this is a napa store with the same three guys for 30 years in buss on the vermilon river. they deal with all the marinas around. he suggestion made sence and did work. i started it up and after a while the big outlet hose to the main egine water pump started getting warm. im thinking it opened and was flowing ok? everything fit ok without the sleeve so i was thinking it should be ok but dont know why it wouldnt work. the housing holds the stst from moving so im asking? thanks dan

Well, in this case, they are wrong, and I have been a marine tech for about the same amount of time. That plastic piece is what holds the thermostat in the proper location. without it, the thermostat will flop around in the water flow and do nothing. Might as well just remove the stat, it's not doing anything.

Then you have the stat in the wrong place. Can you post a picture of your housing, there is a possibility of two different kinds on your engine.

I see what you mean about the stat that was in there but i put the standard old style in the intake and the housing will hold it down so it cant move. im going try to buy the correct one so i can fell better about it for sure. thanks again dan

I would get a diagram from mercruiser dealer and see the sequence how everything goes in or if you can find the mercruiser manual, with my set up the plastic sleeve goes in to hold the tstat in place and there is a grove on the housing that it fits in. Good luck
