Hi guys, I noticed yesterday that there was a pool of red oil on the ground under my engine. on a closer inspection i can see that it is coming out of the top of one of the tilt rams. Can this be fixed?

yep,can be fixed, you should get a spanner wrench that will fit into the holes on the top of the cap where the piston comes out,ive seen guys use punches and hammers to knock em loose but dont recommed it,oh,the cap unscrews out,in case you didnt realize it,the two outer trim pistons are easier, the middle tilt can be a bear because of the pin that needs to be removed,if thats the case, you need remove the snap clip and find a drift pin or rod close to circumfrence of the pin,use a heavy hammer and hit head on,if no luck cause its stuck, try a little heat with mapp gas on a propane hand held tip,or you could bring it to the mech.the parts are availthey fit many different yrs, often they will want to sell the whole cap as a unit, but honestly, its usually the oring inside that goes bad and what is called the wiper,if you have corrosion issues, change the whole cap.if one is bad,the others may be close, lastly, hope the pistin isnt pitted, that can cut the orings, only by removing and inspection can you tell

Re: Tilt Leaking Oil Please Help!!!

Its leaking out of one of the smaller ones. Do I just tilt the motor all the way up and undo the cap or do i need to follow some sort of procedure ilke supporting the motor or draining the oil???

Thanks for the reply. I was worried that i would have to replace the whole lot.

you can use the trailer locks to help hold it up.the center ram should hold it,but better to be sure,or a piece of wood, the outer ones are easier,if you can get a spanner wrench that has protrusions to slip into 2 of the holes, makes the job easier, its a fine thread ,so it takes a bit of turns to undo

the cap will slide off the chrome plated piston, and the piston can be removed by pulling out of the housing, look to see if any chrome is missing thereby leavng a sharp edge to cut the inner oring, you might try going to a hardware store and replace just the inner oring, you will see what I mean when you take it apart,

No Worries. Thanks heaps for all your help. I thought i was getting in over my head but it all sounds really straight forwards.

Im guessing that it would also be a good time to change the oil. Is there a particular type that i should use or just standard hydrolic oil?

Re: Tilt Leaking Oil Please Help!!!

omc does have a tnt oil,but if its red,it was probably using autmatic transmission fluid,i try and staywith what I find in it,the omc will have a motor oil color,no need to change it,just add ,that is done by filling the resovior up to the fill hole, run it up and down a few times and top off again
