I am working on a 30hp evinrude. Started out to replace water pump and thermostat because the tattle tale stopped squirting. When I pulled the lower unit I found a bunch of melted plastic on top of the water pump housing and the drive shaft has more on it almost preventing me from removing the shaft. Some of the plastic is inside the upper hole that the shaft slides through. It started running rough above idle so when I went to check I saw the tattle tale problem but I have no idea how long this was going on. Have I cooked it or can it be fixed? Also what is that plastic that’s melted? It looks like a plastic tube around the drive shaft.

You must have had a blockage on the water intake. Pump ran dry and friction heated the plastic housing. If it ran that long dry you probably got the powerhead hot too. Have a look at the paint on the cylinder head - is it dark? Pictures will help.

Tried to upload pics but keeps saying upload error. Does not appear to be dark or paint cooked. Removed head cover and thermostat. It is stuck in closed position. Can’t currently find blockage on intake side. Water pump impeller and housing look to be junk. Lots of melted plastic. I would like to replace all obviously damaged parts and see what happens. Wasting time and money?

If it were mine, I'd do a compression test (plugs out and plug leads grounded) while you have the leg off, just to make sure the top end is OK. If that checks out, the water pump assembly will need to be replaced, not just the impeller.

What is the purpose of that plastic tube around the drive shaft? It is nearly all melted. Can I get a new one?

What's your model number? Can you attach a picture of the tube you mention?

Sorry about not responding yesterday. Wife thought her stuff was more important so it obviously is. Still can’t get pics to upload. Model # is VE30ELETA. Raceone’s post with the part #s could be helpful if I can find a part # on what’s left of mine but since most of it is melted I’m not sure that’s possible.
