Has anybody towed a 30ft. Party hut with Dodge Durango ?
Looking at getting party hut and would have to tow a long way to get it home, 600 miles
Than only 5 miles to lake and back . Think Durango would OK !

More info. What is the weight of the boat and tailer? what is the towing capacity of the Durango?

Chances are the Durango is up to the weight. The major factor in this case, and I do mean major, is wind resistance, as in a whole lot of it. That issue has more to do with the tow home after the deal is done.

600 miles? I'd get it shipped. Cost out 1200 miles driving plus 3 days of your time (you will be driving slow coming home). And are the trailer and tires road worthy for that trek? anything can handle the 5 miles trip.

5 miles to ramp = MAYBE BUT BE CAREFUL
600 miles home = NO WAY not enough rig for that boat

Anything can be done if there are absolutely no options, but I'm with smoke on this one. Not a good idea. Rent a Uhaul truck if there are no other options.

Durango could probably pull it short, but 600 miles......

Better question, which no one has brought up: Can the 'rango stop that boat, reliably, consistently, safely, in a dead panic.....

there's a reason large boats are shipped, not trailered, long distances. Use a trucking company or a boat dealer.

Have you priced boats like that one which are closer to home? I can't see buying any boat, other than an antique, 600 miles away.

If This is your dream boat and priced right Congrats and go for it !!
I suggest you make sure there are trailer brakes in great shape .
Take a buddy with you that has a Duellie with brake package for towing the trailer .

Leave the Rango at home !!

Re: Towing party hut 30

Guys, most of you are accustomed to glass boats, which generally speaking are much heavier that toons. For example, a 2000 model thirty foot party hut is 3500 pounds. Even if the motor, trailer, gas and detritus are good for another ton he's still almost certainly within the capabilities of a Durango provided it's not a really old one. The trailer will have brakes (it will, won't it WG?), so stopping wouldn't be much of an issue. As I mentioned before, the biggest concern, and it is a big one, would be wind resistance, which he would encounter in spades. However, if he really wanted to tow that beast home with his Durango he could most likely do it with relative safety. One wouldn't want to make a habit of it, but it would be okay.

My problem with this is, habit or not, it only takes once to become a statistic.

Hopefully the op can take these opinions and make a somewhat edjumacated decision ;)

Either I didn't convey my thoughts clearly or you took that comment out of context. IMHO, towing a boat that is large and unwieldy and wasn't really designed to be towed frequently isn't something one would want to do often, hence my suggestion that a six hundred mile tow wouldn't be a good thing to undertake on a regular basis. However, if said boat doesn't exceed the stated capabilities of a given tow vehicle, which should be the case here, there's no reason why one shouldn't tow it if he's so inclined. If the Durango isn't is capable as I suspect, or if the Party Hut is heavier than I suspect, both of which are unknowns at this point since the OP hasn't returned to answer any of our questions, all bets are off.

Re: Towing party hut 30

As I said earlier.... A 600 mile trip with that combination is a really bad idea..... there are no if's and's or but's.... the manufacturer's ratings are based on low profile compact loads..... the sheer size and high profile of that boat make it a very bad match for a durango....
Rent or borrow a truck that IS capable of safely towing it...... "most likely" is not good enough.

The Uhaul mentioned above would be a fine but likely expensive choice.

As incoop mentioned above tho, we are just arguing amongst ourselves at this point tho since the O/P hasn't returned to take part in the discussion

My uncle used to tow one with an Exploder. I made the mistake of riding with him once in the Ozarks. Don't do that.

My apologies to Mr. 'coop. Sometimes my thought are a little off-center to everyone else's. No harm, no foul intended.

Do wish the op would post an update. Newbies, what can 'ya do :p
