Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

Seems that if you live where these camaras are (and I don't, but have seen them), I bet you have ANOTHER light within a couple hundred feet that makes ya stop anyway. Really just stupid people rushing to their grave. They need to change THEIR LIFE, and we would not need cameras. And if you think I give a rats a$$ what you think, too bad, I've had friends KILLED on motorcycles in those intersections by those mindless idiots running lights. In fact, I'm coming to the conclusion that we are about the dumbest society in history. Government a bloated mess, and the cities are cesspools full of rotten vermin and poor *******s that can't get out or ahead........just my not so humble opinion

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

I remember my brother being snapped by one of these cameras. He stopped his car, climbed the pole, took the camera and threw it in the pond next to the light. This was before these cameras were wired to a computer.
Anyway since in this country we are considered innocent until proven guilty,I would like the prosecutor to prove that it was me, driving my car when the picture was taken.I do think that it is impossible to accuse a car of committing any act whatsoever,so a person needs to be fined not a car.

We started the red-light thing a few years ago.
A couple of friends at work got nailed by them.

We have a regular van that sits in front of our job and takes pics all day.

The city vowed to fight every challenge if one was brought up about a ticket.

I'm about 50/50 on this issue.
One one hand, I think an officer should physically see you committing an infraction and cite you accordingly.
On the other hand, our officers should be going after bigger fish than Johny lead foot.

This issue has been brought up before and someone had mentioned that Canada (I think) stopped using the camera vans because there were too many accidents caused by them.
When people seen the van, they would hit their brakes suddenly, and would get nailed from behind.

Best way to avoid a ticket by them is to simply not be a dumb@ss and speed! :)

H.

Can't remember where I herd this but seems some guy was mailed a picture of himself along with tag number and a fine. He said ok, wrote out a check for the fine, took a picture of the check and mailed it to the police station that mailed him the citation.

What would say Louisana do? there drivers don't have a front plate.

If you can't tell, I am a big advocate for using radar photo tickets. Even though it would probably mean more tickets for me. It would save the cops time to go after some real criminals.

my $.02

AK Chappy [/QB]
We've had Speed cameras in the UK for over 10 years now and the government uses them as an excuse to cut the number of cops on the beat that actually DO catch real criminals... They take 2 photographs half a second apart and there's graduated lines painted on the road so they can tell how far you travel in that time. At least you have a chance if you get picked up for it by a traffic cop-late at night...empty road...2mph over the limit....faceless beaurocrat on the other end of the line that just issues tickets, and judges who back them up.....then byebye licence after 4 times.

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

oh, add to that thew fact that the government fund putting new ones up with the fines from the current ones...
The cameras over here take forward photos with Infra-red and rear photos with a flash. God help you if you're coming the other way as someone gets flashed by one at night. Last time it happened to me I nearly put my semi in the ditch before I could stop. It took nearly 2 minutes before the white spot had gone from the center of my vision. The motorists here hate them-they view them as yet another form of stealth tax- and there's even organised syndicates that go around with oxy-axes and cut them down. Add to that the hazard they cause from people braking suddenly when they realise there's one coming up...
Oh did I forget to say we are now apparently guilty until proven innocent when caught by one? we HAVE to sign the paperwork confirming our guilt or the curts assume that by refusing to sign it that we are guilty anyway.
sinister? Against international law? yes....
Campaign against them!

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

These cameras litter the landscape here in California.

I work in the auto rental business and have had to go to court several times to dipute these citations... Let me tell you how it works here...

You run the light and the system takes 3 photos:

1) Your vehicle behind the limit line; also shows your light and that it is in the red phase.

2) A photo of your vehicle in the intersection, light red and at the top of the photo the elaspsed time that the light has been red,

3) Close up of the driver of the vehicle

4) An enhanced pic of the plate on the vehicle.

All of the tickets here are reviewed by a real life police officer. They (usually) throw out the tickets where the driver can not be clearly viewed or there is no plate, or there is no violation.

When this ticket comes in the mail to the registered owner it is just on an 8.5X11" peice of paper with ink jet photos. Kinda grainy. Now you can either dispute the ticket and go to court, pay the fine or if it was not you driving fill in the back of the ticket with who was driving (you know, snitch on your wife, friend, family member etc...)

When you get to court to dispute the ticket the issuing police agency will be there. The few times I have done this the officer asks who is there to dispute the citations. He will pull you out to the hallway and show you the REAL photos. These are basically HIGH QUALITY WEDDING PICS! If its you, VERY hard to dispute at this point.

I have witnessed the police in this instance say, Looks to me like its you.... The judge will most likely think its you... still wanna fight it?

Also saw the officer say, I agree this is not you, I will have this citation dismissed.

Basically your not insulting the officer in this instance since he really did not witness your violation, pull you over, speak to you and personally issue you a ticket.

I think these cameras are a total joke... 1984 in practice. The notion that they reduce intersection accidents is a joke. They produce REVENUE for cash strapped municipalities; period.

My $.05

Just a thought...you could always try refusing to pay the revenue to the people who maintain the cameras and paying the 25% directly to the municipal authorities instead... It'd be interesting to see how they'd go aboput enforcing payment to a profit-making organisation for traffic fines, as the municipal dept would have been paid-in the UK the municipal authorities are the only ones who deem it worthwhile to hunt you down for payment........

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

The problem I have is sometimes slamming on your brakes to not get a red light ticket endangers your self and other drivers more than running the light right as it turns red...I got one the winter before last I was driving a old Chevy Silverado with a couple hundred lbs in the back and was coming down a hill at under the speed limit there was snow on the road the light turned yellow and I started to stop but was afraid I was going to lock it up with all the weight and slippery conditions so I ran the light seconds after it turned red I know the other lights hadn't turned green yet so it was safer to run it. I paid the ticket as court cost here are so ridiculus it it worthless to fight it as you will still pay as much even if you win. I hate the cameras!

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

In Florida, you maintain the right to "face your accuser". It has been fought sucessfully on that right (thier camera cannot accuse).

Same thing here in California.
That is why they are getting rid of them.

However, No appeals to tickets here as they are an "infraction" or, a fraction of a crime. (I guess only a fraction of our rights apply too?)

Also, no trial by jury for infractions.
I would LOVE, to fight a BS ticket with 12 citizens on my side. (But I guess that is why they don't do T.B.J.)

And! You must pay the fine before you fight a ticket. IF You win (which you probably wont) they will then refund your money in 3-6 months.

also, if you plead guilty (or, no contest) they give you a discount. So your red light ticket is only $395. If you plead not guilty, you now have to pay the full amount of $790. When you loose, no discount, no traffic school and a 3 year point.

I say when, because in an over-crowded court system, the judge really doesn't care what you have to say.

Ive driven my friends to their 'trial' before, on more than one occasion, they were never even given the chance to defend themselves.

One friend plead not guilty at his arraignment, and they judge gave him his $1100 fine (red light in the city on Van Nuys) He told the judge "I'm sorry, I cannot afford to plead not guilty" (as nice and polite as anyone could be)
Ohhhhh was that judge pissed. Talk about a slap in the face to the court system. The Judge started yelling at him about 'paying what he owes' Then the baliff went and removed him from the court house.

He was on a payment plan for 6 months to pay the $1100 before they gave him a trial. The officer had transferred to a different area by then, but the court proceed without the officer.

My friend was found guilty anyway, and the trial took all of 5 minutes.
Yeah, this system is fair.

Its in the constitution, we have a right to "due process".
Challenged on that basis it should win.

In a lot of jurisdictions, camera enforcement is a civil process not a criminal one...You don't have the same rights in a civil trial as you do a criminal trial...Basically, the violation is a fine and no points.

You guys would love Massachusettes.

If you get a ticket, and you wish to fight it, you have to pay the court magistrate $25 just to get a hearing.
If you win, you beat the ticket, but it still costs you the $25.
If you lose, you pay the ticket, + the $25

However, If you lose, you can still appeal and have your case heard in front of an actual judge. For a fee of $50.
If you win, you beat the ticket but it still costs you $75 bucks (first 25 plus the second 50)
If you lose, your pay the ticket plus the 75.

Yeah, that's a wicked fair system.

I wouldn't assume that since it's OK to finish your turn after red in AK that it's OK everywhere. When I lived in WA state the law was that you had to be clear of the intersection when it changed to red. That may have changed, it's been quite a while.

In TX you just have to be in the intersection when it turns and you can then complete your turn, etc. But the kicker is that the intersection doesn't start at the crosswalk or the "stop line", it is defined as a direct line from the lane edges on both sides of the intersection. If it is a wide radius turn on the curb that can place the actual start of the intersection 10 feet beyond what you think it should be and , VOILA, they gotcha!

I really don't understand why people seem to think their time is so incredibly valuable that they would endanger everyone on the road to save a couple minutes. If you actually plan and look more than a car length ahead of you stopping for lights isn't all that traumatic.
