That's what OOPS called it from the very beginning. Not Poly Butter or Epoxy Butter Or Poly Putty or Epoxy Putty. But... I guess You Could call it that if you were trying to start a new Trend!!!!
That's a good point. Texture should be like spackle out of a 5 gal bucket. Like PB. Don't tell anyone..but I always throw in chop strand to my mixes.
Make sure you fresh water the area clean { removes blush} on the inside transom skin. Then hit it with acetone. That help to make the glass a little tackey
and eliminates any water to a point because of the evaporation of acetone. I add a drop or 2 of bleach to the water to kill off any molds.
Do a dry run with a buddy so you see how it's gonna guy cause the buddy fella won't really grasp what you're trying to do.
Pay close attention to the edges and fill any voids with PB. Soak the Keyhole really well too. Since you're using Epoxy you'll have more working time than Poly so you won't have to rush as much. Make sure and be prepared to do the filleting and cleanup. What's your temps gunna be on Friday?
Okay gunna take a while for the epoxy to really cure well. Be prepared to leave the clamps on for a while. Got any heat lamps or electric heater? You could tent the boat and set the lamps/heater under the tent to raise the temps. If you could get it up to 75 or 80 it would be a lot better. Epoxy likes heat!!!
I have a total of 4 coats of epoxy on my transom core! It's like glass. I also cut the drain hole section out to prevent Wicking. I'm Going to cut a piece of 3/4" pvc and but it up against my brass drain plug, my hull, and fill in around it with pb. Don't want this to rot again. The epoxy is curing excellent! That's whyi bought the winter blend. Cures great at 40?! I'll have it at 60? in the shop so it will cure real nice.
To set that pvc pipe in your garboard plug hole ...You need a long enough bolt to go through the pipe and the garboard plug out the back of the boat, some fender washers and nut. Put some 3M 5200 on the end of the pipe where it contacts the plug area.. bolt and washer thru pipe..( washer should cover hole but not beyond pipe diameter) then the other washer and nut on the outside of transom skin and snug up to capture together... Now you can set transom and pb in all around the pipe making a nice slope into the pipe.
3M 5200 is a marine sealant...you will use it to coat screw or bolt penetrations in your finished glass work....like engine mounting ,seat bases, thru hull fittings etc. Small tubes are around $7 at home depot.
I have my clamps cut and drilled, 4 coats on my ply, I dry fit today, cut a 1/4" on the top on both sides half way down. Tomorrow morning I'm cleaning with acetone, putting my putty on and sticking it to my hull! I'm nervous, but really excited. I'll post pics when I'm done.
You go boy! keep some paint sticks and putty knives around to work the excess into filets. Looking forward to your results which I'm sure will be just fine.
