Transom rebuild - sliding the engine forward instead of pulling it out?

Has anyone tried to do this?

I just don't have the room to get an engine hoist behind my boat, I have a dirt floor, and the engine is HIGH UP!

OK, I guess that I could pull the boat forward & buying some plywood for a temporary floor, but wouldn't sliding the engine 3'-or-so forward, over the (temporarily reinforced) stringers be an easier way to go?

I have a MerCruiser 2.5L 5-cyl. engine... pretty small.

I think the benefits of having the engine completely out of the boat outweigh any difficulties in hoisting the engine. So, you might as well do what you gotta do to make space, etc for hoisting.

Yeah, you're right, tpenfield - I think I'm going to build one of those DIY hoist frames, then pull my boat out of it's shelter & under it for the pull... then back again into the shelter for the work.

Sheeesh, what starts as a cockpit interior "freshen-up"... !

Thanks for the quick reply!!

A good decision that you will not regret! Getting that engine out of the way, and protected from construction debris/dust/etc. will no doubt save you much more time and aggravation than building a hoist will require.

Good luck on your project!

Thanks, JASinlL - I know that it's going to be a great little boat when I'm finished with it!
