Re: transom saver

My thoughts are the less weight sitting on the transom the better. I leave mine on all the time. Look at it this way, what can it hurt?

Re: transom saver

Hmmm, I had to think about this one. My thoughts are that the transom saver is designed to stop the OB bouncing up and down while towing by triangulating the lower leg to the trailer. If the OB is allowed to bounce it creates flexing in the transom which will eventually cause problems. When stationary it doesn't really do anything - personally I just leave the OB trimmed down without a saver when the boat's parked. My .02 worth.

Re: transom saver

thanks for the reply, I was thinking that the weight of ob would be taken away from transom and transfered to trailor while stationary should benifit transom by relieving stress ? Is there any reason being not vertical that would cause any concern in warm dry weather ?
thanks Triton 11

Some folks way over-think things. If it is ok to use while bouncing down the road, logic says its ok to use while sitting in the driveway -- except of course as was pointed out -- if you have an I/O.

Or your OB manual says to store in trimmed down position, when, in my case anyway, the saver doesn't fit.

Re: transom saver

As already stated, it can't hurt. That being said all transoms are designed to support the engine weight not to mention the torque produced while underway. Common sense dictates weight hanging from a pivot point produces stress points so the use of a transom saver will transfer some of the weight load. Obviously the transom saver was designed with the primary purpose in mind being to transfer road shock to the trailer as well as helping secure the motor better. It depends on your storing situation. I can't use it because my garage bay isn't long enough. Sitting idle it's just dead weight and I have no big concerns the transom will be affected yet still if you can use it, it does transfer weight load. No rocket science.

Outboards should definitely be stored full down if there is any chance of freezing temps. If tilted up, water can be trapped in the water pump and prop housing and if it should freeze, can break things. That is not much of a problem this time of year but come fall, tilt it down.
