Trim indicator Question

I have a question regarding my trim. I just had my mechanic changed the trim limitors. Before my trim gauge showed the trim limiters were set from Down to Up. When you hit the trailer trim it would go past "up". Now on my boat the trim is limited to the "middle" and the trailer trim brings it above that. Which one is suppose to be correct? I am wondering before I ask my mechanic to look into it.

Re: Trim indicator Question

The pick-up is out of adjustment. Loosen the screw/s on the sender. Rotate the sender until your readings are correct.

While you?re at it, find a new mechanic. He should have adjusted it when he ?fixed? it.

I think it's adjusted fine. That's exactly the way mine is. You don't want to have it trim all the way up while under power, too much stress on the gimbal joints. I think you'll find that anything beyond mid guage will cause the prop to cavitate anyway.

I guess the first question would be what are you working on? Johnson, Mercury, Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo, Yamaha, Suzuki ?????

Re: Trim indicator Question

On my Merc with a 5.7 and same drive the trim indicator is exactly as you describe after repairs. It maxes out on the trim switch at just past mid-way on the indicator, then reaches full up trailer with the trailer switch and the indicator shows full up.

Re: Trim indicator Question

Odd, mine is a alpha 1 gen 2, and the trim indicator is just that, the trim...not trailer. When i trim all the way up, my trim indicator says so. same with full down. once you activate the trailer switch, you're not trimming anymore....so you shouldn't need the trim indicator.

I was wondering about that. When the needle points at the "down" position, the engine still goes down. So all I have to do is just loosen and readjust the senders. I see they can slide a bit either way where they are screwed in, I just loosen them a bit and adjust as needed?

My trim gauge show all the way up when it's in the trailer position, not when the trim is all the way up. It stops about mid gauge otherwise. Mercruiser AlphaOne here as well.

Watch that you are adjusting the correct one!

I believe that one is the sending unit (port side I think, but confirm), and the other is the limiting switch so you dont over extend when trimming.

I'm no expert, but I believe that is how they are. Check your service manual to confirm.

Re: Trim indicator Question

On my 1988 Mercruiser Alpha 1 trim indicator is on starboard side and has "T I" on it, and trim limit is on port side, with "T L" on it. Just my $.02...

Re: Trim indicator Question

thats the way its supposed to be.......but lets see what don s says.

but the trim only goes up so far for the reasons allready posted......the trailer button is the full rise.

when trailering out of the water....make sure you hit the trailer button or you will drag your skeg.
