Trying to turn over by hand - 87 OMC I/O

Hi Forum,
This is my first post at iBoats and I want to thank the forum posters for being willing to give such great tech info.

I recently acquired an 87 Bayliner Trophy Cuddy with a 140hp OMC I/O. Engine has obvious problems and needs a lot of work. When I got a good look at it, I found 2 of the cylinders filled with water. I pulled the spark plugs and tried to turn it over with the key. I'm pretty sure the starter motor is good, it seems to kick pretty hard, but the pistons don't move. I'd like to try to turn it over by hand and wrench, but can't find where to get a wrench on it. The flywheel has a cover over it and the engine mounts block access to the shaft on the other side.
Do I need to remove some thinks before I try to turn it?
Thanks for the advice.

Ayuh,... Pull the Motor....
With water sitting in the cylinders,...
It'll NEVER run right without a Rebuild.... Even if you could get it to turn over...

IF the starter won't turn it over, pull the starter and use a prybar to bar the engine over using the teeth on the ring gear.
If it won't turn then, it's time to take the engine apart. The rings are probably rusted solid against the cylinder. Even if you did break it loose, the rings, pistons, and cylinders are scored and damaged and wouldn't be very dependable.

If it's in that shape, I wouldn't try the pry bar unless you want to buy a new ring gear or flywheel. Pull the engine and do it right!

Thanks all,
I think I will pull the starter and se if I can push it over using the ring gear, but only with moderate force. If I can' t do it, I guess the motor is coming out or it can become someone else's DIY project.
Thanks again,

Good luck with it, I parted out a motor that had water sitting two holes, I could not get the crank to turn even with the engine down to a shorblock, I could not even access the rod bolts to take the caps off, even removed the crank mains and still couldn't get the crank out, ended up beating two pistons into little pieces with a piece of pipe and a sledge hammer. It was a ford 427 motor or else I wouldn't have even wasted my time, sold the crankshaft for 800 bucks!
