/begin rant

so I bust my butt all over the winter/spring to get my boat finished so we can go camping over memorial day weekend on an island and right before this...I decide to do some routine maintenance to my truck...oil change and spark plugs.

I was fearing the plug change because my truck is an 06 f150 with the 5.4 3v engine that has the dreaded 2-piece spark plug design...I was prepared with new single piece plugs and the broken plug extractor tool set.

nope, god hath frowned upon my whoaful self.

I mean seriously? I'm on day 3 and probably going to have to pull the engine out and pull it apart to fix this...why cant I have nice things? seriously?

I just wanted to go out on the boat this weekend and propose to my girl on a nice moonlit night on the beach.

sigh.

Rule #3, subsection 4, paragraph B of boating misery manual states (paraphrased of course)

"...never, under any circumstances in hindsight or foresight, just or unjust, with cause or without cause; never fix anything that isn't broken in either the boat, and/or the tow vehicle, unless it is winter time and you have no plans to use either for the foreseeable future...."

If you can't get it fixed in time, rent a truck and go as planned. Propose to your girl and don't even think about the truck...

yes, it should be...but due to the plug and head's horrible design, it is better to do it sooner than later. I can only imagine if I'd waited till 100k, all 8 probably would have broken off...

You don't do this. This is bad idea.

hindsight, but I agree.

every time I try to "tune up" the rig before a trip something goes wrong and I can't get the part in time yadda yadda.

I've yet to find a rental truck with a hitch by design by the rental car companies. I needed a truck a few years back to tow a boat and you'd have thought I was asking the rental car companies for the impossible.

Think we've all proven that nugget of wisdom true the hard way at least once.

Re: unbelievable!!! RAWR!!!!

the guy has a good point with the grease comment. Something like a wooden dowel and a light coat of axle grease might pick up those pieces, or might stick them to the side with the grease making it worse, which is my luck

What about tacky cloth, like you'd use for wood finishing? jab it down in there and maybe it's just sticky enough

Just tell your lady the truck comes first. If she's OK with that, marry her.

Uhaul rents out trucks too and they do have hitches, just a thought. Don't let that truck ruin your weekend holiday plans. Good Luck.
