It's "funny" how that works! (not really :( )

You might consider taking the engine to a local machine shop and have them give you an estimate on rebuilding.

There's one here in Buckley that's already done one for me and I'm considering another down the road.

410 Machine, Buckley I don't have the number but they're in the phone book.

It appears that you have a severe detonation event in that one cyl.

Well I got the head takin off yesterday... I have a dime size hole in the number 3 piston. Can I start thinkin about a new motor now?

So I couldnt get by with just replacing the piston and ring for now?

I was gonna tellyou--if it was my motor, I'd drop the pan, knock that on cylinder apart and stick a new piston on the rod with new rings and reassemble it. As long as you didn't see any other signs of damage. And take a close look at the valves on that cylinder.

If you're going to try and replace the piston, (as Super Nova suggest) you need to find out what caused the hole in the first place. Does it appear the hole was burned there or was a chunk knocked out??

Forgot to ask...Where can I find a rebuild kit? How time consuming is this?

Replacing the piston might fix it for a while.

Look carefully at the combustion chamber where it happened. Was there a lot of carbon buildup? That might be responsible for a detonation event. A severe detonation will absolutely pop a hole in a piston.

Here's some examples of online companies selling engine kits....

You also might consider a short block if your heads are otherwise good.

You can also get a kit from NAPA, National, Schucks, etc.

The cylinder looked ok. I'm just wondering if I would have enough room to get in there to do the work? Like I said it wouldnt be till the end of the summer until I could afford the new engine and I want to get it out sometime this summer.

I'm pretty sure the engine will have to come out if you plan on trying to swap out the piston.

You definitely need to lift it up a few feet, you're gonna want to see what you are doing.

Re: update...not good

Iv'e decided I'm going to just hone the one cylinder and throw a new piston/rings in there for now, with the motor in.I should be able to tackle it using a mirror and a buddy hopefully. Any suggestions on where I should get the parts?

Re: update...not good

If you're not going to take it all the way apart, don't hone the cylinder. You'll just be introducing more grit into the motor.

Be careful when honing the cylinder. It will send some fine ground metal around.

That is going to be tough to do with the engine in the boat. Taking the pan off is a challenge. I have changed a pan while the motor was in the boat...never again.

Sounds like you're setting up for a magic trick. ;):) You may find you'll need some when you try and re-install and re-torque the rod and bearings. Your better off pulling the engine. That way you can turn it over when you hone it (If you can clear the crank that is) and flush the cylinder away from the crank and rod assembly. Good luck however ya go.

Well I was thinking of sticking something down in there to protect the crank from any fine shavings...If I pull the motor I might as well rebuild the whole thing which I dont have the money to do right now. I might as well give it a shot.

Sure, give it a shot. Don't let the naysayers dissuade you. Just don't hone the cylinder.
