Now that many of yous seem to disdain changing oil ... why? If it's personal preference, so be it. If it's based on performance facts (that you can cite), better elaborate cause I can't see why a two cycle would care as long as the components receive adequate lube when running.

Old Curmudgeon .in answer to your post...
20 year old motor that ran fine on stock outboard oil.. built up deposits..so switching to syntec oil.
no problem.. except the syntec/gas mix would wana burn off the deposits...as i found out with a Jon Deer wipper snipper. it near weld'd up trying that.

on my 1960 gale i use stock oil for the foot and gas
on my 2005 johnson 2 stroke 30. pur syntec..
personaly syntec for New Motors and use oil that was oringaly used.. for old motors...

Hint on Gail bonnette... USE ONLY GOOD QUALITY SAE 30.. good luck... :p

Just a couple ideas to help you decide. First, is that Amzoil certified TCW3 - which is the type of oil specified for your engine? If it is not TCW3 certified, I can't think of any reason to use it because there's many certified oils at all price points from cheapo Brand X to full synthetic Name Brands.

Second, if it is the correct type certified for your engine - why not buy a gallon and see if you can tell any difference. That's what I've done a few times. For instance, you "might" see less smoke, smoother idle, faster, better accelleration, whatever you look for. If you actually think it works better in your engine to your objective eyes, ears and nose, and think that's worth the high price, go for it, it's would be a good deal.

You certainly will have no objective idea whether it's "better" for the engine - for two reasons: first, I don't think there's any data that any specific TCW3 oil is better than another for the specific engine you have and the way you run it. Second, you'd never notice it anyway in your lifetime without tearing the motor down today and then years from now and having very, very fine measurements. I don't think any "Normal" certified TCW3 oil will not harm your engine if used properly, on the contrary, it is specifically designed for your engine. That's why I mention those other performance-related (eyes, ears, nose) criteria because that's all you'll really be able to ascertain - and they are perfectly valid.

Myself- I've tried Quicksilver, Pennzoil full synthetic, Castrol, Johnson/Evinrude and a few quarts of gas station TCW3 when I ran out. I've never seen any appreciable difference in oil, including full synthetic, for my '82 Johnson V-6. They all work about the same. So I just buy good quality oil at a good price. Right now I'm finishing up a case of Castrol Super Outboard and after that I'll start using a couple gallons of Quicksilver Premium I got on sale. I used to buy John/Evy or Quicksilever in bulk but dont' any more because I can get Castrol and Quicksilver gallons closer to home, for about the same price.

Hi D,

Is Quicksilver Premium not synthetic oil?

Was it not Castrol that joint-ventured with Evinrude to make the synthetic oils for the new two strokes?

If the old oils are so fine, why do guys have to keep recommending putting additives into the fuel system?

The real issue is still credibility and I'm not seeing zip on this thread.

Re: Use AMSOIL Synthethic oil?

Hi all;

I've just discovered this thread and, in the interest of full disclosure, I'll say that I am an Amsoil dealer. I became a dealer because I like the products and I wanted to have a convenient supply for my own use. Over the last 13 years I've used Amsoil in my own cars, trucks, lawnmowers, wood splitter, wood chipper, chainsaw, trimmer, power washer and a few small outboards. Is it the absolute best oil on the planet? Who knows. It works for me though and I really like the fact that I can have a stock of 5w-30 on the shelf that will work in every 4 stroke I own. I mix up the 2 stroke jerry can at 75-1 which splits the difference between Amsoil recommendations and the old tech recommendations. I do notice less smoke and I believe I'm getting adequate protection at this ratio.

Anyway, the reason I'm responding to this stone-cold thread is because I find it ridiculous when the argument is made; "my grandpappy used mineral oil his whole life and if it was good enough for him it's good enough for me!" My grandfather used to drive around on natural rubber tires that needed to be changed every 10,000 miles - technology moves forward - tires are now good for 60-75,000 miles. Look, you may not like Amsoil (maybe some pushy dealer left a bad taste) but it's pretty much accepted that synthetic is superior to mineral oil. Whether or not you believe it's worth the extra cost to buy synthetic or if you want that synthetic to be Amsoil is a whole different discussion.

The point made above that you shouldn't switch to synthetic engine oil if the engine is high time/high mileage is good advice.
