Re: Use AMSOIL Synthethic oil?
Hi all;
I've just discovered this thread and, in the interest of full disclosure, I'll say that I am an Amsoil dealer. I became a dealer because I like the products and I wanted to have a convenient supply for my own use. Over the last 13 years I've used Amsoil in my own cars, trucks, lawnmowers, wood splitter, wood chipper, chainsaw, trimmer, power washer and a few small outboards. Is it the absolute best oil on the planet? Who knows. It works for me though and I really like the fact that I can have a stock of 5w-30 on the shelf that will work in every 4 stroke I own. I mix up the 2 stroke jerry can at 75-1 which splits the difference between Amsoil recommendations and the old tech recommendations. I do notice less smoke and I believe I'm getting adequate protection at this ratio.
Anyway, the reason I'm responding to this stone-cold thread is because I find it ridiculous when the argument is made; "my grandpappy used mineral oil his whole life and if it was good enough for him it's good enough for me!" My grandfather used to drive around on natural rubber tires that needed to be changed every 10,000 miles - technology moves forward - tires are now good for 60-75,000 miles. Look, you may not like Amsoil (maybe some pushy dealer left a bad taste) but it's pretty much accepted that synthetic is superior to mineral oil. Whether or not you believe it's worth the extra cost to buy synthetic or if you want that synthetic to be Amsoil is a whole different discussion.
The point made above that you shouldn't switch to synthetic engine oil if the engine is high time/high mileage is good advice.
