When do you start consuming ISP bandwidth? Do you have to have a web page open or is it just when your computer is on and hooked up to the internet?

Re: Using up ISP bandwidth?

You use bandwidth when you are downloading or uploading. This happens most often when you go to a new web page or refresh. This is typically pretty small compared to streaming audio or video. When you do this you have a fairly steady stream that can require a lot of data (e.g. - streaming a Netflix HD movie).

When you are not doing anything, or just looking at a web page that you downloaded already you are not consuming bandwidth

(Technically you do have programs and systems that do look out on the net checking for updates and stuff, but this is pretty minor and not really a factor when it comes to available bandwidth).

Why the question?

Ayuh,... Hi Boomer,... I'm no geek, but I believe,...
When I clicked this page, I used bandwidth to load it,...
And,...
I don't believe I'll be using it again, til I hit the send button...
So in other words, it's when yer loading a page, or file, either Up, or Down....
While viewing a static page with no inbeded moives or adds, Nothing is being used...
Or,...
Atleast that's how I understand it.....

I know when the ole Lady's kids would download Movies,...
I couldn't do Squat on my 'puter....;)

edit; Ya got in over me linder,...;) :D

Thanks all for your explanations. The reason that I asked was out of concern, now that I am streaming NetFlix movies, that the more people that do this, the bigger load on the ISP.

I am sure that each ISP's cumulative capability has limits.

At any rate, I could forsee the time when the cable and internet service providers could become maxed out?

Happens all of the time, already.

It's their job, to configure more capacity, when needed. Just takes $$$.

Some ISPs will throttle heavy users but that typically happens when someone hosts an FTP server at their home. You won't have anything to worry about.

...... Just takes $$$......

That is precisely what I'm a'feared of; that they will want to get those $$$ from me!

It is not exactly like there is any real competition in the ISP arena! Local phone service DSL always tries to make their service compare with cable, but it doesn't.

In many places, cable Internet is not all that hot, either. Internet bandwidth is being gobbled up everywhere - big time.

Capacity upgrades are just a part of the business. Hopefull they will eat most of it and go gentle on price increases.

This is America. Just use a much Internet as you want and worry about capacity later. ;)

Re: Using up ISP bandwidth?

This has been a problem with online communications since day one, I spent several days on the phone with my ISP last week, due this very fact, I suspect they set a new customer up in our local town that was transferring massive amounts of data at a certain time of the day, and it affected everybody. it always started at 11 am and ran until 1 pm, when I called they kept telling me it was impossible, but I know better. When I sent them a letter stating I was not getting what I am paying for signed by my attorney, it was amazing, all of a sudden it got better, I told them that I wanted my bill pro rated for 60 hours a month..seems they cleared it up real quick, now the slow down comes in the middle of the night...not the best fix, but at least it does not happen in the middle of the work day!

Hmmmm? Seems in my limited understanding of things, I've struck a chord here?
