Can someone tell me what the voltage should read at the battery when motor is running?Trying to test for charging on a 95 88 SPL.

Re: Voltage

Battery should read 12.6V when at rest. With the engine running and the alternator charging it will read higher. . .anywhere from 13 to 16V. Typical is 14V.

Re: Voltage

I tested it at the battery and got around 12.25 running or not.I didn't have the motor on the water only on muffs so i didn't take it above 1500-1700 and the results never changed.I had just put a new rectifier on but i'm thinking i might of got a defective part? It's a CDI part which most people i ask about it says they have never got a defective part from CDI.If the stator is bad will motor still run?

Re: Voltage

Yes it can run on a bad stator. The stator contains two systems, one for charging the battery and one for supplying the juice to the ignition system. They are not connected.

You need to test stuff before replacing it. I suspect you know how to use that multimeter. There's no voodoo in electricity.

Re: Voltage

A boat volt meter will typically show battery voltage just after starting. That could be the 12.25 volts you are seeing. After running the boat, the voltage will slowly come up as a result of the rectifier charging the battery. Your 88 spl has a rectifier (only,) so your voltage will typically rise to and (unregulated) 15-16 volts after running for some time. These small V4 engines did not have a high output stator, so you may want to take the boat out for a lengthy test run. Once started, the engine does not run on battery voltage, so running it will not further discharge the battery-unless you play the radio or have dash gauges-depth finder hooked up.

Re: Voltage

You can test the stator with the engine OFF

Remove the stator wires from the rectifier, test them with the ohms meter, you should have continuity.

Test each wire to ground, you should have NO continuity.

Of course, sometimes an ohms meter is misleading and looks as if the charge coil is good, yet fails as soon as it is put to work, the broken winding heats and separates.

Test yet again with a test light plugged into +, attach to one stator lead and ground the other lead. If the light shows, then it IS a good stator.

DO NOT test a trigger this way, 12 V is too much and will damage the trigger.

Re: Voltage

I did test the rectifier before i bought a new one.someone sent me a link from joe reeves about testing water cooled rectifier,i tested it by putting the tach/sending wire to the yellow/grey wire from stator and the tach worked, but would not work with grey wire from rectifier.I bought a new rectifier, installed it and still no tach.Motor was running a little warm so i took it to shop to have impellar replaced, the tech said he would see if he could get the tach to work.He just hooked it up to the yellow/grey wire from the stator, which i could have done.Is there any other way to test the rectifier?I have serched and serched and the only test i can find all leads to what i have already done!

Re: Voltage

took boat out today, voltage started out at about 12.1v and ended up the same.got my manual and read about tesing charging system, but this stuff is in foreign language to me.can someone please simplify how to test stator output?which wires to test and what settings to use on multimeter?
