You can test the stator with the engine OFF
Remove the stator wires from the rectifier, test them with the ohms meter, you should have continuity.
Test each wire to ground, you should have NO continuity.
Of course, sometimes an ohms meter is misleading and looks as if the charge coil is good, yet fails as soon as it is put to work, the broken winding heats and separates.
Test yet again with a test light plugged into +, attach to one stator lead and ground the other lead. If the light shows, then it IS a good stator.
DO NOT test a trigger this way, 12 V is too much and will damage the trigger.
