Volvo Penta 270 outdrive

Could someone explain What the hoses are for on a 1984 Volvo Penta 270 outdrive.I noticed one of the boot type hoses has a small hole on the bottom.Its the longer boot.I think it may be the exaust hose.If I'm correct the other boot is the cover for the drive linkage.There is a smaller rubber hose that I suspect may be for the cooling water supply.Am I way off?I noticed what apeared to be exaust smoke coming from near the back of the boat which is why I looked around and found the hole when I got home.Is this really bad for the engine?It seemed to run fine.Can this hose replacment be as easy as it looks?

hey trber...i have the same year and model. sorry i cant really help you but i have exaust coming from where my drive goes into the stern...worries me allitle. i'm not taking on any water and was told from some locals it's no big thing..i'll watch your post and learn too.....

and the one rubber boot in the moter compartment is your sea water intake.. it should have a metal strap to tighten, i think thats the longer one..and the only reason i know that is it came loose one day and had a little flood. i'll look in my manual now for you

Trebor,<br /><br />The bottom boot (bellow) is the exhaust and it should have a small hole in it. Its purpose is to drain any water left inside the exhaust when the leg is raised - don't worry.<br /><br />The top boot is the driveshaft boot. It critical that this boot is in good condition, any water entering through this boot will hurt your bank balance. <br /><br />The third hose ('s' shape) is the raw water intake. Also critical that its in good condition, a leaking raw water hose will allow air into your cooling system and cause overheating.<br /><br />All three are easy to replace, the driveshaft boot requires removal of the upper gear housing - its not difficult if you follow a manual.<br /><br />Aldo

Trebor,<br />I have a 1985 with a 270 Volvo outdrive. Dunaruna is right about all those rubber parts. Especially the upper boot being critical. If it gets stiff and gets cracks it will allow water to flush the grease out of your gimbal bearing. The bearing only cost me $15 but was a pain to get out. But I got it out and it sounds great now. I use Amour All on the boot occasionally to keep it flexible.

my bayliner trophy was in parts when i got it it needed a new trasome and beds , i did the work and water came rushing in around the leg, i took the leg off and the motor is not inline with the housing on the bolt on part of the leg ,so an alignment is goin to hapen but is there suposed to be a rubber gasket on the inside also agaist the motor? or just on the out side ? thanks guys
