96 Christ Craft 25' - Volvo Penta 5.8EFI

Hello Everybody, this is my first post! I did a research over the forum looking for a similar problem but did not find the very same one.
The engine will start right with the first rev when cold. After 20 or 30 minutes of riding if I stop it for a few minutes and try to get it running again it will get 30 to 40 seconds of continuos keying to get it up and running again.
I need to be sure the batteries are good enough because those 30 seconds will drain them being a V8 and heavy to get up and running.
I changed the Low pressure fuel pump a few months ago since it died. I cheched the pressure in the system and it between specs.
The only code the computer was giving was a faulty Low Pressure Fuel Pump that I changed and never gave me a bad code again. I also changed the relay just in case.
I am guessing the fuel evaporates after stopped with the hot enviroment inside the engine compartment (but everybody should have the same problem!!!!) I tried to make the fuel pump to energize a couple of times turning the key only to the on position without turning the engine, so the pressure in the system gets back to normal but no difference.
Thanks to everybody!

I you think the fuel is getting hot within 30 minutes, try to run that long with the engine cover open. That will keep you cool and you could maybe eliminate this possibility.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.8EFI hard to start after warming up

Thank you kanga, I will try that tomorrow in a long run.
Anyway I started it today in the dock and after 15 minutes of running I stoped it and re started it with 10/15 seconds of rest and it will start right away (like the fuel is still there)

But i found somethig extrange between re-starts: we I shut it down I will still hear the injectors being energized......I look around in the forum for that problem but nothing. You can hear 4 or 5 of them at the begining and then they will start to stop one by one every 5 seconds till you hear no more. Are they suppose to keep opening after the key is off?

I am guessing now that the injectors stay open and dragging the fuel into the cylinder and that is why I get an empty fuel line after 20 or 30 minutes.

The weird part is that if i come back after 2 days the engine will start right away as new.

I do not get it. Doesnt make any sense.

I will get a light test to the connectors to confirm there is currect still going to the injectors after turning it off, after that test I do not know where to go......bad ECU??

Is it possible its flooding? Next time this occurs, give it full throttle when trying to start and making sure to bring the throttle back to idle once it starts. Full throttle during start will keep the injectors from squirting in any fuel.

Well, I took off all the injectors to bench test them and they all work fantastic, the cone, the timing, no leaking a single drop after power is removed so I need to take the injectors out of the equation here.
Nevertheless, I still believe this is flooding as bruceb58 suggests since the first cold start is instantly after you turn the key and the hard start will happen only after 20 minutes of stop so now I am pointing to something I notice last time: the injectors still clicking after the engine was shut down.

Somehow the fuel is getting into the cylinders even when the Injectors are fine.

Could it be a short to ground or the computer acting weird what gets the injectors still opening after the engine has been shut down and the power turned to OFF and flooding the cylinders?

I will test and check the wires to every injector on saturday and report. If anybody can tell me what else I can test please let me know.

Thanks a lot for any clues,

Re: Volvo Penta 5.8EFI hard to start after warming up

Any update on what the problem was? I am having this exact problem with my 5.8 EFI and have been told that it could be a fuel pressure regulator issue. The diaphragm may have cracked and then allows fuel to flow through and flood out the engine. I haven't replaced the regulator yet and am curious what others have found.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.8EFI hard to start after warming up

Hey,

I am having the same problem with My 95 5.8L Fi PMDA. After warming up it is impossible to start. It will crank and crank, but won't start till it cools down. I know it sounds like vapor lock, but I'm not convinced. I've replaced Plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor button, HP fuel pump, EEC and fuel pump relays. I've tested the fuel pressure at the rail and get 36 psi. I've checked the spark and it's good.

I also hooked up my Snap-On scanner and got an error code 13 "cannot control rpm during low rpm check". I seem to have a small surge at idle that gets worse up to ~1200 RPM and disappears after that.

Sound Similar? I have yet to pull my fuel pressure regulator because it primes up to 36psi and stays there without bleeding off pressure after the initial prime when you turn the key on.

I haven't pulled my fuel injectors to see if one is leaking either because i'm not losing fuel pressure at the rail and no one else seems to have injector issues on this type of motor.

If you all have found a solution let me know

Thx guys

I would check the anti-siphon valve on the gas tank. when mine went the boat had a surge, burned up a fuel pump and was hard to start when warm.

I had this issue last season and would like to know if there is an update or a resolution to the problem. Thanks!
