Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater
Very good advise.
If you want your boat working correctly, your going to have to take your time. These outdrives are very unique and are not something you just figure out by taking it apart and putting it back together. Parts don't just bolt up like one would like. When your working with old used parts, thats what they are, old used parts that my need maintenance, I would not just bolt on a used upper gear box without having it gone over. there are seals in the double bearing box within the upper that go bad, and replacing them takes more shimming and adjustment.
If you want the boat to last more that a couple trips out, take your time, fix it correctly.
Start a new thread for each part of the project. Don't get off topic, the pro's aren't as patient as PP40 and myself.
Good luck.
The only way to find out is to ask. Probably time to start a new thread to focus attention on what you're doing now.
As far as shimming - it just takes the proper tools and of course the knowledge and ability to follow directions. I suspect that you could find someone who knows what they're doing to take care of that part for you. Adding where you live in your signature might help. From the picture of your boat, I"m guessing that you're in Ohio. If you're near Port Clinton or Sandusky, you'll probably find a half dozed or so people who work on these drives all the time.
Bottom line on all of this is that you won't know until you ask the right person!
