Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

Have a look at the wiring diagram. There are four terminals on the ignition switch. The red wire is the hot lead coming from the battery/big post on battery. 12V always. There are also two terminals with green wires. They are the switched terminals. One feeds the power to the guages etc, the other single green feeds the coil. This also passes through a resister, dropping it to 9.6 volts according to you, and there is a fourth terminal with a white wire which goes to the solenoid/starter motor.

If you can access the back of the switch you can test it with a 12v test light.
I does seem like a switch problem but i may be worth testing before replacing.

When you're working with the wiring schematics, keep in mind that it's what was recommended over 30 years ago. The manufacturer could have done it in any possible combination and who knows what else someone changed over the years. You can see below what I initially had to work with. The main ignition wire in the schematic is listed as green but you can see by the picture that the resister has a black wire on one side and a red one on the other. Not impossible to figure out but another source of frustration.

The way it's supposed to be isn't necessarily the way you'll find it.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

Well I think I I really screwed up the outdrive. I ad it out on the lake and it was cruising great. Plenty of power now! So the throttle stuck open due the screws being loose and theb the throttle cable slipped. I tried to back it down and accidenatlly went into reverse. I can put it in forward or reverse and no movement now at all.. I put in rever after I got towed in and I can not turn the propeller... in forward it now spins freely.... can I fix this myself or does a mechanic need to look at it. Would the lower unit be thrashed or all of it?

Thanks and help! Wife is not happy!

pull the upper gear box and see what you find.

maybe you broke the coupler between the upper and lower.

I'm about to pull it now I think ... is that just the 4 screws on topand it will come off? Please excuse my ignorance. Are parts readily available for this outdrive?

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

I pulled the top cover off and the very back cover .. I can see the bearings for the spindle and the linkage for the transmission ... I can spin the propeller either way (in neutral) and the bearings and cener spindle spin nice and smooth ... What do I check next ..

Also is there a manual for the 280 outdrive ?

Thanks!

Follow this thread to remove the upper gear box. Removing the top cover you removed doesn't tell you anything, but you'll need to order new seals for the top cover before putting the boat back in the water and make sure not to loose the shim under the top cover.

http://www.4shared.com/file/48536730/fa3b3311/280_to_DP-C_Drive_manual.html

here's the outdrive manual.

All of these links are in the adults only thread under the volvo info page.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

OK .. I have it all apart .. Looks like all 3 gears are stripped ... Are these easily replaced ? Easy to get parts ?

Here is a picture of the damage I caused !

The throttle stuck open because the screw holdng the clamp was loose .. But it still stuck above idle at around 2000 RPM .. I could not get the throttle to come all the way back to rest on the idle stops .. I had to oll it back on the carbs by hand .. Just clean and oil the cable ?

THanks !

Sorry to hear about the bad luck.

Probably be cheaper to find another gearbox than try to fix that one. They're on ebay quite often and the prices are all over the place. Luckily they're quite plentiful. Might be on local Craigslist and a local marine boneyard may be able to help you out. You'll also need to take new measurements for the shims between the intermediate and upper section - I had a certified Volvo tech do mine.

No way to tell about your throttle linkage and cable without pictures. Figure F9 on page 33 of the manual shows you what it's supposed to look like at the carb but the clamp isn't shown. A picture of my cable at the clamp is below.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

I found a upper gear box off of a 275 out drive (1986 I believe) Paid $100 for it .. The splines on the u joint are 26 spline and mine is a 10 spline .. I am hoping I can just change the u joint and use my existing one ...

I think I am going to try and shim this myself .. I was a machinist for years, so I would like to give it a shot .. What am I shimming exactly ? The spacing between the upper gear box and the intermediate area ? Just make sure it is level ?

I am hoping I lucked out with this part, it should be here by the end of next week!

Make sure the helmet pins are the same otherwise it can be a problem.

The manual has shimming info I believe. I've never done it.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

I went through the outdrive manual and didn't find a helmet pin ... What is a helmet pin ? Is it what is attached to this post I cut out of the manual ?
That was my best guess... Those two are different .. I may have to some parts swapping (hopefully)

What I would like to happen is to remove the gear from my current U join and place on the new gear box and then place all back togather ... Looks like I have to shim bewteen all the covers with atleast .004" clearance I think I can handle that if I just follow instructions ...

I just hope I have the correct part coming!

the helmet pin attaches the steering helmet to the upper gear box. Some pins have one bolt, some have two bolts, I think the 275 has a two bolt helmet pin.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

The shimming I was referring to is for the upper assemblyto the intermediate. Measurement insructions start on page 94 of the 280 manual. I haven't done it myself, just took the lower end and gearbox to the mechanic so he could take the measurements and give me the correct shim stock.

The forward yoke should be an easy swap. Just pop of the u-joint yoke and swap them out. It's allways a good idea to inspect, lube, and if necessary replace the u-joints now. I don't think I'd be opening up a can of worms by disassembling the new gearbox to try to swap out gears but that's just me.

I don't mean to be suggesting ways for you to spend your money but now is also a good time to replace the driveshaft bellows since everything is apart. Inspecting and replacing the S hose water neck now would also be in your best interest if it's needed.

They are different. Can I swap them or use the collar with the non 2 bolt one?

PP40 those ate great suggestions! I have to replace the bellow because it is dry rotted. Sivthe u joint end just presses out? Do I need to heat it? My u joint has no clips.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

There have to be clips somewhere on the u-joints. Most likely on the inside. You may still have to press them out.

That collar is called a clamping ring and is #35 on the drawing: http://www.volvopentastore.com/Upper-Gear-Unit-Aq-Drive-Unit-280-280t/dm/*******.492576832--**********.050722592--store_id.366--view_id.317461

Afraid I don't know if they're interchangeable between units or if the helmets are the same. Might be best to shoot up a flare for help from someone more knowledgeable in that particular area.

Might try a search for "helmet bolts" or something like that and see what comes up.

If you swap the clamping rings, you're getting into reassembly, checking running torque, and other clearances. I've had some bad personel history with the the gearboxes so don't feel like I'm in a position to tell someone else how to do that part

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130 and 280T outdrive help for new boater

 I hope I didn't waste money on that gear drive ... I guess I could always re-sale it .. If this does not work .. it may be just easier for me to buy the entire outrive all togather .. seems like all I can find are the 270s though ...

In your opinion would it be easier to just get a new outdrive and put in instead of worrying about the shimming and all that ?

Thanks,

The only way to find out is to ask. Probably time to start a new thread to focus attention on what you're doing now.

As far as shimming - it just takes the proper tools and of course the knowledge and ability to follow directions. I suspect that you could find someone who knows what they're doing to take care of that part for you. Adding where you live in your signature might help. From the picture of your boat, I"m guessing that you're in Ohio. If you're near Port Clinton or Sandusky, you'll probably find a half dozed or so people who work on these drives all the time.

Bottom line on all of this is that you won't know until you ask the right person!
