The fill hole is on the top of the drive right? but is there a fill level hole? It takes 2.53 us quarts.
The drive is a dpsm1 1.95 ratio

Re: Volvo-Penta gear oil?

remove all three plugs- dip stick on top, fill level plug behind shift linkage, fill/drain plug behind props
drain all old oil checking for water and grit
you slowly fill from the bottom (behind the props) to avoid air pockets
fill till it comes out hole behind shift linkage cover
install all three plugs (top 2 first )
top off, if needed thru top dip stick hole
dp-s is 81 oz of Volvo Penta Synthetic Gearcase Lubricant
this info might be in the stickys up top in the vp section

If lubricant has been completely changed, oil level must be rechecked
after unit has been run and trapped air purged. Improper oil level will
result in serious internal sterndrive damage. Add make-up oil through
dipstick opening to bring oil up to proper level.

Do NOT fill it from the top, a quick way to destroy your drive. Fill it from the bottom (plug near the prop) with one of the screw on adapters they sell at any place that sells marine equipment, they even have them at wall mart.
The fill level hole (DO NOT FILL FROM HERE) is above the shift linkage, behind the upper cover that takes 3 10mm bolts to remove. You will see it once you remove the cover.

It's a good idea to replace all the plug o-rings while you are in there.

ALL THREE PLUGS, INCLUDING THE DIPSTICK ONLY GET 5 ft lbs OF TQ. These are easy to strip and very often are WAY over torqued.
