Re: Vote for a boat please

I used to have a 27' Silverton, single screw. Two things to consider: Where are you docking it? Single screws are much harder to dock if you're fighting a current or a stiff breeze, unless you have a big rudder like the lobster/commercial boats. And the single screw was a pig on gas, couldn't get up on plane unless it was going with the current, and couldn't outrun the foul weather. It had a nice cabin though, but I would have traded cabin room for more power. And I like the Commander, haven't seen too many of those Tolly things around here......Good Luck

Yes, docking isn't the fun part about this thing. I used to have a 27' Chris Craft single screw and it was a handful to dock sometimes but I managed. Almost all 26' Tollys were made with small blocks so I think the big block will be fine. It's the 330 hp version. Tollys are heavy but have a relatively flat bottom at the transom so they skid along nicely. They are one of, if not the most popular 26' boats around lower Vancouver Island. There's no question the Commander is a really nice unit, but it seems the ones that are of the same vintage as the Tollys I'm looking at are a little worse for wear. They aren't as solid of a boat. The Commanders also continue to go down lower in value than the Tolly's do. They're very different boats and (after doing a lot of homework) it appears that the Tollys are a better choice (for me) and next year it'll be worth the same as it is now.

Re: Vote for a boat please

Hey there, we've been haggling over the price but I think we've got 'the number' now. The survey and sea trial will take place this week... it's not mine yet but it will be soon hopefully! We're very excited! This seems to be dragging out so damn long but we had to wait out the price... we're not rich and needed the deal. The first... make that second thing we're gonna' do is go for a day cruise and slow cook a roast in the oven (wife had a dream about the roast). I'll keep the updates updated :)

ummmmm, pot roast (my best Homer Simpson voice...)
Keep us posted.

I've decided....alas(sort of)... to keep my existing boat (24' Striper) since I need speed to fishing areas more than I need sleeping/cruising facilities (the good/bad news is that my wife isn't interested in boating, but has no objections to any I do). If I could get her to dream of pot roasts in boat ovens, I'd be a 26' Tolly owner in a heartbeat.
Funny how our dreams of women change as we get older, eh?! :D

Man oh man oh man oh man... this guy's a tough cookie! Here's the deal, he wants $36000 bottom line but I offered only $34000 (it's all I got). I think the guys rich because of his job (big time realtor), a fancy wheeler-dealer. He's going to pass on the deal I think... so we've put the roast in the freezer for now. What a drag! The broker said to hang tough for a while, he may come around :(

Don't let him stare you down magster. Another 6 tollies will be along before you know it.

Also, if he's a good realtor with lots of dough he got that way by closing deals and moving on, not hanging in there for $2000. If he's not a good realtor, then he probably needs to sell to pay his bills and taxes and so he'll close the deal. It's only if he's independently wealthy and just sells real estate for fun that you have to worry and if that's the case he should have a bigger boat.

Never get in a hurry! He will call back or you will find another boat..This time of year is a buyer's market! Stand down and give him your phone number.

Tough choice, but I think I'd go with the Commander for the twin engines.

Hang in there; there are lots of Tollys, and more on the way....it is a buyer's market.
If you see a boat in the Portland/Vancouver (WA) area and want to look at it....come on down. We'll treat you and your wife to the pot roast dinner! (need a graemlin that's smacking his lips here)
Sorry, Jack, but that's bad advise on the Commander for this part of the country (s!). Tollys will always maintain their value, while Commander is just another boat.....notwithstanding the twin vs. single engine discussion.

Re: Vote for a boat please

I said I'd split the difference and the seller went for it. I'm happy about it, it's in better shape than a few that sold recently for more money (different marina). So we finally have the price! Now the 'subject to's'... sea trial tomorrow, survey asap.(been in a boathouse since the last survey but I'd better do it anyway). We're going boating with a roast in the oven soon. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! I can smell it now :)
Way to go! You didn't settle for a pot roast but got the prime rib of boats. Keep us posted on your progress....we know you won't be able to resist adding some carrots and potatoes (how long do you think I can up this analogy?) :rolleyes:

Re: Vote for a boat please

Houston, we have a problem. The sea trial...
650 rpm = 3.8 mph
1000 rpm = 5.1 mph
1700 rpm = 7.5 mph
2200 rpm = 9.0 mph
3000 rpm = 13. mph
4000 rpm = 18. mph (WOT)
It likes to slide along at 8 or 9 mph. The motor sounds very smooth and healthy but this isn't what I expected to see on the GPS for speed. According to the research I've done this boat should cruise @ 16 ish / 3000 rpm. I've asked for the bottom to get cleaned and we'll try this again, in the mean time I'm going to talk to the prop guy and see what he says. Other than the speed issue the boat is very nice to ride in and it handles better than I expected.

Re: Vote for a boat please

I'm sure you've already looked at it, but there's several threads on this subject on the Tollycraft Boating www.tollycraft.net According to Pete, you might not get as much speed on a straight shaft than on the v-drive because there's not enough space for a larger diameter prop. Don't know if his theory is correct or not, but if so, you may be getting close to optimum speeds, unless you want to go to a more shallow pitch and boost the rpms to 4500 (that's assuming that the engine was propped optimally after it was converted from small block). Got a really good prop guy up there?

Yeah, talked to the prop. guy, he's going to have a look at it when we haul it up. He figures there's a problem too. Barnacles and weeds we're hoping to see, maybe a bag of mussles, clams and oysters too. :)

Would make nice hors d'oeurves for the pot roast!
On the Tollycraft.net, take a look @ the post "goes too slow" by John, started 12/21. His speeds sound very similar to yours; do you suppose it's the same boat??

Re: Vote for a boat please

Good detective work Capn :) That's me. Check this out :)
The second sea trial...
600 = 4.1
1000 = 6.5
1500 = 8.3
1700 = 9.2
2000 = 10.1
2200 = 10.9
3000 = 15.0
4300 = 25.1 WOT (was still accelerating but we backed off)
The bottom was fairly 'dirty' so we pressure washed it off. It needs to have the bottom stripped and repainted, it looks like the moon it's cratered up so much, worst I've ever seen actually. I bet it's got 15 coats of bottom paint on it and was flaking off in areas but they just put another coat over top. Bad. I bet it's never been stripped. The surveyer was with us for the sea trial and haul out. No bad marks against it! The surveyer said it was in overall excellent condition but to scrape/sand/paint next time it's out. He also noted that all the areas of concern on the last survey had been addressed. It has a 14x13 prop now and after the sea trial we all agreed it could swing a cupped 15x13 or maybe even a 15x14 on it when the bottom's done (spring). It accelerates effortlessly until 3900 or so then starts to level off, I'm sure that's due to the bottom being so rough (I wish I took my camera). I know there's another 10 mph in there. I don't dare say more than that... Tollys aren't supposed to go that fast. It stays on plane down to 12 mph at which it's only turning 2400 rpm. Another thing, it doesn't need trim tabs for bow control, it always seems to be in the right spot. I was impressed enough that I bought it today. Keys are in my pocket! We definately made the right choice here. The wife and I just went down to measure up the oven for the roast! Looks like a three pounder! :p Maiden voyage tomorrow, I'll be up at 6... if I sleep at all! Thank you everyone for your input.
