Hi there!
First of all, please excuse my poor english - I'm from Slovenia and English is not my native language
I red all of FAQ's and other posts about this problem but I still need an opinion. I bought an used (1997 make) Monterey 262 with VP 5.7Gi engine, duo-prop drive in 2003. at the first year boat was doing perfect - 35 knots with full tanks and 4 persons.
Because I don't have a lot of knowledge about engine I let a local mechanic in marina to look over my engine - before winter and minor repairs. But the truth is that year after year boat had less and less performance.
But last year the "real" problems started. I had a lot of difficulties to even get the boat to get out of water, this year it is impossible.
Symptoms: in idle I can push the throttle to the max and get healthy loud V8 sound and about 6000 RPM. When I hit into gear and push the throttle to the max it will only "blend" the water and about 3.000 RPM. No way to get the boat out of water or even to cruising speed. Last year I somehow managed to get the boat to plane with some tricks (like slow acceleration and "playing" with power trim and trim tabs), but top speed was around 27 knots and 3/4 of throttle. If I pushed the throttle a little more, engine will loss power and I could spot a little of black smoke. This year I can't get more then 12 knots
I called the mechanic and we changed both pumps (LP and HP), spark plugs, spark plug cables, oil and fuel filter. Nothing better. They checked the engine for fault codes (everything OK), checked the timing and compression. They spotted that compression is a little bit low (6 to 7, where 10 is max). Running out of solutions they proposed two things - rebuild the engine with as they called "Long-block repair kit" in value of $4000 - $5000 or completely new engine.
Could it be that low compression is the case and if it is really necessary to spent such amount of money to regain full compression? I don't want to be "screwed" by mechanics - with their "reputation" to pull out a lot of money for small repairs...
Thank you and best regards,
Gargy
